i have a weak stock alternator in my car that is rated at 80 amps. I want to run a JBL 1200.1 to my subs. Will this work? Will this promote failure to my alternator? Are there any ways i can perhaps increase the efficiency of the amp and/or reduce strain on my alternator? im trying not to get a h/o alternator till i get my new car soon...any ideas?

we'll go from cheapest to most expensive:

1. capacitors. they'll help a little bit.
2. batteries. they'll help more.
(both of those are only bandaids and your alt will still run the risk of eventually dying)
3. getting your alt rewound (wouldn't recommend it)
4. getting your alt rebuilt (best cheap option)

5. high output alt (wooaahh expensive)

blah blah blah blah

G, Reinforce the Positive cable from the Alternater Positive to the battery positive with four guage cable (factory normally use 8 guage).
And also run a four guage from the Alternater case (or mounting bracket) to the Battery negative.
Your alternater will thank you.

Why not just buy a seperate battery just for the system?

Upgrading the gauge of wire that is between the alternaor, battery, and chassis is the best inexpensive way to provide high current devices with the power that they crave. Adding a second battery to the already taxed system will only increase the load on the alternator, adding to the present strain and furthering the problem.

High output alternator might not be as expensive as you think. Check out www.mralternator.com.

I agree with you Michael...
adding more load does not make any sense.

Capacitor helps for short burps..If you plan to play at high volume for longer periods..you need an alternator that can output the current that is required.

The other question is; Do you need an 1200.1 amp or would 600.1 be enough.... I believe the 600.1 is also rated as a class D...

Class D amps should draw less current...
The Diff between 600.1 and 1200.1 is not much in DB....the Subwoofer selection and your box makes a lot of difference

Check out the stock alternator options for your ride. ie: research other cars with the same motor, with bigger alts. I went from a 90 amp to a 120 amp direct bolt in on my old ride. It helped lots. I go with a 160 amp aftermarket one now for my new ride.

lol, engines are very powerful, even a 4 cylinder. yes a 4 banger will be able to turn a high output alternator.
