Ok..i have a stupid yet liable question...im wanting to build a motorized amp rack..im thinking of using a power window motor ( maybe a power wheels motor ? ;D )anywho..my question is..im thinking that those motors will move the rack itself to fast..im wanting a slower opening not one thats going to sling the amp through the windsheild or somethin..what can you hook up to the motor/switch/whatever to slow it down..?

I would get all the motors and such from Select Products. You might be able to try regulating the voltage to change speed or try gearing it to add torque and lower speed. Just like a transmission in a car.

Any of these motors is going to produce a rotary type of motion. You can use gears and a chair or just a gear meshing method to change the ratios to a speed that suits you.

any idea on where to get linear actuators from that would provide about a 8-12" travel?

I know select products has em, but they are like 300 bucks, any other ideas

or will a window motor work for lifting about 40-50 lbs???

Window motors don't have the torque necessary to lift heavy static loads. For high torque requirements (40 to 50 lbs.) you're going to get the best results with a linear actuator, like those sold by Select Products. The cost is really not all that much when you consider the application and the durability of those units, a custom made actuator will start off at about $450, but a standard stock unit from Select should work well.

hey mabeita, i found some motors that aren't window motors, but how much torque do you think they'd need? i am still considering linear actuators, but i am a mechanical student and would really like to try it b4 i go to the actuator option.

Without knowing the weight that has to be moved, it's kinda hard to say exactly how much torque is required. Almost any motor will work for this application, but the determining factor for the motors suitability will be the drive mechanism. If you need ideas, or want to discuss some of your own, e-mail me and I'll help you get going.

the way i was going to build my rack it wasnt actually going to be lifting the amp..it was going to move the amp out of a concealed enclosure..do you still think the window motors wouldnt have enough torque to move the amp..the amp would be no more than 20 pounds. thanks for the help

Mike, I hate to tell you this , but Fishman and MadDog used power window motors for the Pyle Beast, to raise that piece up out of the center of the bed. It had I think an amp or 2 and a Pyle logo on it.

I agree power window motors will work in many applications. ie if you are going to build the rack to move outward.. use a roller track for the rack and this makes it almost float out with no resistance (very similar to the track on high dollar SnapOn tool boxes) We have some track here at the shop that will hold 150lb at 3/4 full extension and the are used in large ampracks such in the back of trucks.

Got bass is looking for a drawer set up, while i was looking for a straight lift of about 35-40lbs. And after doing the math and discussing it with a professor of mine i have decided to just us an actuator.

By the way i did find em for about 100 bucks less than what select products had em for.

www.autotoys.com has em a 10" linear actuator, for about 235 i think, that's the biggest they have, it is 12vdc with a coupla hundered pounds of lift ability.
