When you set amp gains, place stickers over the holes or over the knob, with the date that you set the amp gain on. Too many times I have seen a customer think of the gain as a volume control. Just be sure to get a sticker that is sticky enough to where if it is removed, it will leave some residue on the amp case. Just a thought.....

There is a shop around here that did that. Put stickers over the gains and if you removed the stickers warrenty was void..that simple.

Now if I could find a way to remove the "bass" control from the deck.....life would be good. And a limit on the deck volume wouldn't hurt either...

Also with the knob version of gain controls, you could still use the sticker, just make sure it comvers the whole button and still sticks to the amp casing.

If you're careful you CAN slide the knob out of the gain pot........
Capple, to quickly set gains I like to slide in a good loud CD with clear vocals, good bass and highs, etc. First turn the CD up to about 80% volume. Then I turn the gain of each amp up independently (with the other amps off) until it just sounds bad, then back it off a hair. After all amps are set this way you can turn DOWN any amps that are playing louder than the rest. Easy. Plus you have some 'knob' left for those quiet CDs.

here's one for you, don't know if you do it already or not...
Any amplifier that had allen head wiring screws (binding screws that secure wires into terminals ), fill them (the screws) up with solder.. then, if the customer has a problem, you can just heat up the end of the allen wrench and stick it into the solder, but a customer will have some problems with this.. Keeps them from messing with the wiring... I wouldn't suggest doing this with those wussy gain pots, though :-)
The sticker idea is great, but I can picture some tinker-addict dangling his amplifier over a steaming pan of water and using GOO-GONE... :-)

I guest where is as going can or dose a guy need to look output volts of the deck or EQ. In the spec. of them they have like for instance the deck I have has 4 volt out put (JVC El Kemillon) and the AudioControl EQX has a max output of 7.5volts and the RF amps have a variable input sensitivity of 250mv to 4v. What dose a guy do with all of that? In the pas I did as you said for the most part. I turn my amp gain to near 0 and put my deck at 75-80% max vol. and use the EQX to balance out every thing. Also in there between the deck and EQX are more toys ( ESP-2 and Epicenter). Dose a guy try to mach output volt to input sensitivity? What are all these numbers used for?

Hmmm, well the JVC delivers 4 volts, then the ESP2 and Epi take that 4 and only deliver 2 (unity gain up to 2 only folks) and then the EPX takes the 2 and jams it up to 7.5 which the amp can take (yes I know, 240mv to 4v...) Well, since the EPX has input and output sensitivities I would adjust those first (the owner's manual tells you how) and then the gain on the amp.
I've typically found that even when dealing with processors tha can do 10volts that you can still come up on the amp gain before audible clipping. It's the nature of dynamic music compared to test tones.
This is the real reason I prefer to set EVERYTHING by ear. The RTA is handy to smooth the responce a bit but the ear is a better tool.
