Don't. You guys probably already know this, but if you have to jump start someone's car, pull the fuse on your power wire out and turn you radio off. If you don't have to jump start someone, don't, it can really mess up your ecm. My friend jumped someone's car off of his Geo Tracker and it changed the firing order on his engine. Took forever to figure that one out.

I would recommend only charging their battery, not actually starting the other car. Hook up the cables for a few minutes, let it charge, then disconnect and start the other car. This will work fine for all but the most dead batteries.

I've heard of several alarm systems being damaged due to jumping another car off...

Depending on the type of vehicle, it is impossible to literally change the firing order, at least the mechanical firing order. I could see an ECM getting smoked and causing the coil packs on a distributorless ignition system to fire erratically, but this problem just doesn't exist on an older system using a distributor and standard ignition (non HEI). Buy mechanical firing order, once the engine is assembled, is going to require physically changing the timing of the crank and cam to acheive a different firing order.

All I know is my friend told me the only way his Geo would run after that was to switch the number 2 and 3 sparkplug wires - which would change the firing order.
Of course, this is the same guy that filled his car up with kerosene by accident from a can in his garage. Maybe thats why his geo won't run right now.
