Name brand is "Great Stuff"

I'm not sure if what expanding rate those cans are---but be careful putting it places. I can't count the number of dimpled body panels I've seen from people using expanding foam.

Home Depot and Lowe's sells it. I've had better luck with the minimal expanding stuff. The triple expanding can expand up to, if not over, 3 times what you spray out. It continues to expand as it dries. Can't completely fill a gap with the stuff while it is liquidized (is tat the right word?).

I have a problem with it expanding then shrinking. It pulls the sheet metal inward. Anyone know why?

Installed the "Great Stuff" expantion foam today. I'm planning on installing the Dynamat Xtreme in a couple of days. Think 2 days will be long enough for the expantion foam too dry ??

i love this stuff, never had it shrink, did you use it when it was cold and damp? what was the weather like when you used it? temp and hummidity affect things like this from my experience.

i used 4 whole cans of great stuff in the hatch of my old explorer...definitely made the hatch much more solid and stopped the majority of rattles.

however due to my lack of planning it over expanded into the lock mechanism and i was unable to open the hatch from the outside any more. After 5 days the expanding foam in the middle of the hatch was still a liquid.

I suggest if you're going to fill large voids like hatches, doors etc to only do 1 can at a time. Let it dry then build on top of that.

Thats good advice, I used it on a cooler day and the foam in the middle did not set up completely. Every day that it was hot out for the next week it would oze all over my trunk, and that stuff is a b!tch to clean up. I dont think the mess is worth the results unless it a pure spl car.

One can at a time per day applied and allowed to dry above freezing is a real good idea and I've found that if you have access to the foam after you've sprayed it take a stick or something and stir it up kind of lay it down if you will it will expand less and dry alot harder or more compact.

i dont like using the expanding foam... always seems to expand to much and is insaine to clean up even if thiers the smallest crack or hole for it to ozze out of!

with my old 66impala i used about 6-8cans of the spray foam that says it wont overexpand. worked so much beter than the expanding foam!!!!

also another tip would be duct tape any hole over after cleaning around the hole so it sticks good.... spray the foam in and then tape over it! duct tape residue IS SO MUCH EASIER to clean off than spray foam! i missed 2 holes in my lid and of course it ozzed out of that hole and left a big pile of crap on my trunk lining which ruined it and had to redue it!
it was a huge pain for such a tiny hole that i missed!

but one thing id try to remember is the sheet metals thickness.... newer cars are usualy realy thin... but old school rides [Wink] its preaty hard to pop those around!

BUT AGAIN.... one thing no one realy thinks about until its done with..... the extra added weight! my trunk lid would slam itself closed with just moven it afew inches.LOL

It's not for everyone thats for sure but it does work alright for certain situations I lost count at over 75 cans in my van mainly in back and on the side of my box and I still need 25~ cans and this is only supplementary to the 1500+ tubes of polyurethane caulk [Eek!]

Yeah, don't touch it! unless you are wearing gloves. As far as re-using a can... fuhgetaboutit. It's a serious mess and a PITA.
careful planning is essential. (the duct tape idea is definately a good one)

I work construction and we use this all the time for sealing windows .. If you use the minimum expanding it seems to be a little softer and fill the gaps cleaner.. Sucks about the dimples in the trunk [Frown] , i ve never seen any bends in any of our window sashes or any twisting, and believe me its alot harder to dimple a trunk than twist or bow a window.. .. Also expansion and contraction, heat and cold might give into this alittle bit but it shouldnt be so bad as to hurt anything

If you need that much foam your gonna go broke buying it in the cans.
But the cheaper and easier way for filling large holes ...go to your local boating supply store or dealer and tell them you want ..2 part floatation foam.. it will be 2 gallons ..part a and part b..
mix equal amounts and it will turn to a hot chocalate look then you have about 4 minutes to pour..and this stuff gets alot harder than great stuff..it can be cut or even sanded on. its the same stuff that metra sells called fish foam but alot cheaper..its about $38 for the kit..and thats equal to about 25 cans of spray foam..works good for also making molds for glass work..
