I'm upgrading my power line to 0 gauge and I have run into a small problem. the fuse holder is huge and I can not fine a good location under the hood near the battery. Question, does the fuse holder HAVE TO BE under the hood close to the battery or can it be placed inside the car, some were else on the power line?

within 18inches of the battery is preferable... or else, may as well not even bother [Razz]

Now, i've known this from the beginning but what makes this different than the factory fuse box under the dash? That's way more than 18" away from battery.

Most vehicles also have fuses under the hood.

The 18" thing is something David Navone pulled out of his a$$ on a flight to the first car audio national's finals. He wrote the rules on the way. He has stated several times that the number was just something he thought of, and not based around anything in fact.

However, you do want it close to the battery. If it is 19"--that's fine though. The purpose of that fuse is to protect the vehicle. In the event of a short, you don't want the wire from the battery to the fuse to be real long. The wire is going to get mighty hot all the way to the fuse. The further that is, the bigger chance of a fire.

The reasons why manufactures suggest you put it closest to the battery is because if the power wire grounds out IN FRONT of the fuse, the fuse will not protect it. The further back the fuse the higher the chance the wire will ground out in front of the fuse. If you put the fuse far away from the battery it will NOT in any way effect performance. I run 1/0 AWG wire from my two alternators up front to the batteries in the back, and it is not even fused. I just make sure the wire is protected from any sharp corners or very hot surfaces, or anything else that can cause the wire to ground out. Not running a fuse is not the smartest thing to do but, it is the best for SPL competition. I also do not run a fuse to the alternator because the starter draws its power off the wire.
