alot of the newer cars use J1939 serial communication. So there may not be a speed sensor wire...just two twisted wires that send digital signals back and forth. If there is one it'll be somewhere off of the transmission or engine...possibly you can pick up that signal off of the alternator. Most likely you're just going to have to go get a haynes manual and look up where the computer finds this signal. There's a chance it'll use the signal from the ABS brakes to determine speed too. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

By the way....why does a navigation system (which I presume has GPS) need a speed sensor from the car? The GPS should already know how fast you are going

Jbrod- That's a good Question. You would think that if the nav. unit has gps functions it should be able to track speed and direction without a hitch. (Like garmin hand held units)

But I know when installing an AVIC-N1 you have to tap into the speed sense wire and the back up light wire. huh... go figure?

the reason you need a speed sense wire is if you were ever driving under a bridge or have no gps sattilites
the speed pulse will keep the unit accurate untill it has sattilites again, some units have the option not to hook up the wire but it will not be as accurate
