I've been given a choice on subwoofers. Please keep in mind that my next system is going into a yet to be determined vehicle, but I am pretty much decided on the whole system. It will consist of: McIntosh head, Zapco EQ30SL, Zapco Z100C2SL, My existing a/d/s/ 325is components, and a single subwoofer. What would you use for an all out SQ system? My choices are any Image Dynamics 10 or 12, a/d/s/ 10, Oz 250L, Velodyne 12, Orion hcca 10, or Focal 33VX. All opinions appreciated, and taken into consideration. Please remember that I am ONLY doing 1 sub. High SPL means nothing to me, SQ does. Thanks...

I only have experience with the ID subs and I loved them. I've always liked OZ subs, and I would assume the Focal and ADS subs are good. But I would have to say that the Velodyne would be my choice, they look sweet and have enough technology to make any nerd happy.

Well I will comment on the subs I have heard.
The HCCA subs are very cool. Great low end. But picky as hell on the box. Like power.
The velodine..great sounding sub. Same with the ID..

If the velodyne car subs sound half as good as my home sub (F-1200X) then they are the best there. Besides, the words "dual accelerometers" just sound really cool. I think for low distortion and low end extension, they really can't be beat. I hooked mine up to my computer with a function generator. You'd be suprised how many things fall off the wall with a 13.5 Hz tone. 15 Hz made my neighbor come knock on my door to see if I was ok. 20 Hz was so loud if made me have to go to the bathroom. I think you get the point here.

Velodyne or the IDs. Have you looked into the Digital Design 9100 series?
I know this is a side note, but have you also checked out the Arc Audio amps? Robert Zeff designed these after he left Zapco. They look great, sound great (from what I hear- would an amp be Robert Zeff sound bad?), and cost alot less that the Zapcos. I think I will use them or the Linear Power 2.2HVS (like the Dynaudio Blazer Uncle Ber) in my next system overhall.

I love OZ, but don't put too much power across them! They sound really great, but they take a HUGE box for a 10.. I think like 1.5 or 2 cubes. And you really should port and tune them low to get the full effect.
But If you've got a/d/s components, why not just go with an a/d/s sub? They sound good, good power handling, nice response, high quality product... and you already have the components!
Hey.. Why don't, just as a suggestion, you take a look at getting a more conventional (read: Less expensive) deck and bypassing the built in D/A stage (which is expensive, but trick)? (You sound like you're doing a cost no object kinda deal )

I also love the Oz 10's... had them in the last system with the a/d/s/ components, and damn did it sound good! I was heavily considering the Velodyne, not because I like the way it sounds, but because of the accelerometer thingys... but I think I will go with a single Oz 10. I finally found a decent car too. It's an 89 Accord LXi, very similar to the one I had. No console from floor to dash (helps quite a bit), plus, my old kicks out of the '88 will bolt right in. Too bad this ones an automatic... Oh well, cant have it all. I was going to use the McIntosh deck, it already has the toslink outputs, but, since no one seems interested in my Nak cd-700, I may end up keeping it. The sponsoring shop used to carry Nak, so I may be able to get away with it. Now, I need to find a really good supplier of crossover components, cause that is going to be a huge, gorgeous, definately for show x-over network, complete with phase reversing on all 5 speakers, and probably 3 or 4 different levels of tweeter padding.

Boston Pros would be sweet in that set-up, but from your suggestions, I'd have to say the Velodynes!! If they weren't on the list, then I think the Oz Audio might nudge out the others. HCCA would win in SPL, but not familiar with it enough in the SQ environment.

I would go with the Velodyne sub. The Velodyne will maintain the integrity of your system. When the 325's were released, they were hands down the best 5" seperates that were available. the Zapco and McIntosh equipment that you have listed are also top of the line. A/D/S/ makes a damned good product, and those seperates are still some of the best SQ speakers available. The Velodyne is supposed to be the pinnacle for subwoofers. Based on your equipment selection, I would stick with the home audio manufacturer and get the Velodyne. You won't go wrong with it, but you must decide if the servo system is worth the extra money over the A/D/S/ or the others. Do it right the first time and get the Velodyne. The servo system will allow you to run it, ported, sealed, or IB. This is a big benefit to you, considering you do not know what vehicle you are putting your stuff into. Good luck.
