I have been doing some system experimentation lately. I have found that my car (early 300ZX) images and sounds the best with the speakers firing straight up from the floor boards. This is good because it gives me room to build a propper enclosure for the new mids. I have been thinking about ADS, Morel, and Focal as replacments for my Arias. But the Morels need a large enclosure, so I probably won't get them. There isn't a Canton dealer around so I can't listen to them, even though Dukk said that I would really like them because they sounded B&Wish. So, my question is has anyone ported ADS coaxs or the 200 series drivers? I don't have Term Pro at my disposal so I can't do it myself. Will ADS give me ported enclosures over the phone?
Anyone had any luck with the ID Chamelons? Can get those at cost, so that is very nice as well.
Any thoughts guys?

Mid-range drivers typically sound best in sealed enclosures. Porting them will make them sound more "honky". Car speakers have a stiffened suspensin that is less compliant than home drivers, because they are designed to be used in "infinite baffle" design which a typical car door presents. The stiffened suspension allows also for increased power handling and lower resistance design for use with 12 Volt amplifiers.

I don't know anything about porting mids but, I've used the ID chameleons in two different cars and I really like the sound of them. They aren't the best I've heard, otherwise they'd be in my car and not my Illusions.

I had ported a/d/s/ 320is mids in the accord. They sounded absolutely wonderful! No honkiness at all. They were in .13 (I think that's how big the boxes are) ported, tuned to 70Hz. Sounded awesome. I have heard some ported mids that have a really bad resonance at about 1600Hz, which is the honk that Eli was talking about...

Thanks guys for the input. There are just too many speakers that I like, and can't decide which ones will be next. I can get last years Diamond Hex 6.5s w/silk tweeter for about $350.
JC2: I like the Illusions, but there is no way that I can fit horns in my car. Well, there is, but it is next impossible to drive with them. Might give the IDs a try since I have the IDQ-6 mid basses already.
Audiophyle: Still have your subs and headunit? I thought about buying them just for the Straightwire. Would you sell the wire seperately?
Decisions, decisions...

Audiophyle, the "honkiness" I refer to will be noticed if you take a mid driver, and listen to it in a sealed, and then ported (infinite baffle) enclosure. It will be prevelant in the upper mid-range, and specifically in female vocals. As I said it will seem to sound less loud in a sealed cabinet, but the mids will be fuller bodied sounding. My opinion, as per my ears.

Winslow, I have the Illusion components in my car, I couldn't fit horns either. If you are thinking of putting mids in the floor they might be worth a look, the 5" are about 1-3/4" deep.

What kind of info do you want? They come in 5,6 and 8" have the carbon cones, silk tweeters, a well designed x-over. They have the same type of frame and magnet as their subs. I have the 5" components and they sound amazing (IMO of course). They have excellent midbass and a sound similar to Diamond Hex's. I believe they just starting shipping the components in August. They are definately worth a listen. You might want to talk to your dealer about them, when I told my dealer I wanted Illusion speakers the guys at Illusion let me have a evaluation period. If your dealer doesn't want to stock them maybe they would work a deal like this. If you have any other questions let me know.

Thanks jc, I will call him tomorrow to see wha the dealeo is on these speakers. I love the Illusion speakers, but the horns in my car made it almost undriveable. They now make "regular" tweeters now! Awesome. You just made my day.
