I am pretty good with SPL related topics, but not SQ. I want to attempt SQ in USAC in 2000, but I also want to be competitive in DbDrag. I want to do a wall in my Dodge Daytona hatchback with 4 15's. I am just curious if doing a wall will cost me points or hinder my chances in SQ. I was considering using 8's up front for bass, and only using the wall at SPL comps. What do you guys think?

Only problem will be not being able to reproduce the lower registers of musical bass, because your wall pretty much kills any chance of being on the 1/4 wave of a lower note. You could overcome this by heavily eq'ing the lowest registers, but that would end up probably making you lows sound very tubby and thumpy. Tech-Man has been doing quite well all season with his walled dodge, maybe he could better answer this question.

It is all system setup and how well you can get your midbass to work. I competed USAC in 96 and had Veritas aluminum horns with USD motors, Diamond 6.5 midbass in custom kicks, and a wall with 8 12's. The car sounded great and I received many compliments on how well the bass eminated from the front even though the subs were right by your head. It can be done, but expect hundreds of hours of tuning. Well, that's any SQ car though. The Griz has spoken.

Well I have seen one car here locally that had a wall of subs in an SQ can and the car will be at USAC finals. The person that owns it is Tony Rodregiuz (sorry on the spelling of that last name) he is among the top 5 in USAC points. A good portion of the points was done with his truck BUT the car has also done quite well. I have not gotten a chance to listen to it but from what I remember being told not damn bad...considering....
BTW he has PHGold amps and SS SPL 170 15's...6 of then in a Betetta..

I have had a chance to judge a truck with 4-15's, 2pr of mids and 1 pair of tweets. Scored a big fat Zero. The first bass notes at moderate listening volume created tremendous air pressure that did not allow the mids to work without wavering (like talking through a fan). Needless to say the competitor was an unhappy camper, but understood after some basic explanation of physics.

So, it can be done, but it is all about how well you tune it, correct?
Right now, my box is 5 cubic feet with huge ports. It sounded like crap when I first used it musically, but over the months, I have found the sweet spot with my amps and EQ that it really sounds nice musically, and know where to set it after an SPL competition. This sort of thing is what I would be looking at again if I were to do a wall. I just was wondering if I should build another box like the one I currently have or do 4 separate sealed boxes? Is anyone familiar with PG Xmax's. I have heard on numerous occasions that my stuff would hit much harder in a sealed box?????

I agree with Griz sounds like they needed a lesson in tuneing a SQ system. Heck you need very little bass in relation to the mids and highs. Not the type of bass that creates that kinda of pressure.

If I do a wall with two 15" DD9000's for SQ will they be two slow for a good transient response? should I go with 12's? I also want spl. I have now room for mid bass larger then 2-4" per side. Im still working on this as its a big problem getting any spl around 80-100 hz out of them, which is where i need it for imaging. Audiophyle, you said, Only problem will be not being able to reproduce the lower registers of musical bass, because your wall pretty much kills any chance of being on the 1/4 wave of a lower note. I dont really understand that? Lower "registers" of musical bass? and do you need to be a 1/4 wave away from those lower notes to hear them properly? or did you just mean the lower notes will have to much pressure below the 1/4wave.
