on my high end im wanting to know how you can tell when you have the center axis for the sound(not sure if termanoligy is write). when listning to a cd in my car you can not hear one speaker over another. it sounds kinda like a surround system for your tv. is this wright or is there a better way? sorry if you get confused from all of this but didnt know how else to put it.

As far as I know (and I'm still a little hazy on this), it should sound like you are actually there. That is, the singer should "appear" to be singing in front of you, but not screaming in your face. You should not be able to close your eyes and point to where the speakers are. Sounds should appear to be coming from places that are not possible in the confines of the vehicle. Maybe I'm not the best one to be explaining this. I guess to know what it's supposed to sound like, you need some sort of reference point. I use my home system in which the main vocals seem to float between the left and right speaker, the background singers are behind the main vocalist and are very widely spaced. As far as where the instruments are supposed to be, that depends on the recording engineer. There are CDs you can get to help you with this. Sorry if this caused more confusion than help. I know how it's supposed to sound, but I find it hard to put into words.

When you close your eyes (or even with them open) the band should appear to be out on the hood of your car. As to placement of individual instruments, that varies by recording. Generally, the lead singer is going to be centered, in front of everything else, and it should sound that way. Also, the drum kit is generally centered, behind the lead singer. You should really consider going to listen to a live orchestra, and getting seats pretty close to the stage. You'll be able to hear what I'm talking about. You'll also get a little better understanding of what the instruments are supposed to sound like.
