I've been getting more and more into car audio and have figured out I like sq more than spl.. my original purchases didn't really work towards this and I've been working at switching my system over. I'm looking to get a new source unit and don't know what would be a good unit, I only have about $500 to spend and am looking at:

used Alpine 7998
Used Eclipse 8053
Alpine 9887
Pioneer DEH-P800PRS

These are some of the ones I tend to have found that I can afford. What are some of your opinions of them to start a first-time sq system with? Are there any other ones that I didn't list under $500 you would suggest i look into?
Thanks in advance for the help.

I am currently using an Alpine iva-d310 source. I have Eminence Alpha-6C mids with Seas 29TFF/W (H1318) tweeters for front stage. I'm running a Crossfire 1502 to the mids and an Eclipse EA2000 per tweeter, I have 2 Alpine 10" type R's off a profile amp in the trunk but I plan on swapping these out this summer for something else, more than likely my RE SX-12 on a Crossfire 2000d. Also I have RE XXX 6.5 mids in the garage just have to work on building kick panels for them. Willing to change the tweeters as well but don't have anything lined up. A lot of this will be changing, only putting it here because on some of the other posts I read asking for advice I noticed that the first response usually probed for some information on what the base equipment was.

Afternote: I'm looking at possibly getting an Alpine 3656 active external crossover network. If I get this I don't forsee needing a lot of crossover options on the source.. Should I forgo getting this and put the money into a better source? I think its going to be around $150 for the 3656

Well after alot of reading and research I would spend the money on the Alpine 701 processor and a good headunit. I have heard the RE XXX 6.5 drivers and they sound great.

I'd keep the D310 and buy a 701 processor. use the money you were going to use for the headunit and that crossover and buy the much more flexible piece. My memory tells me the 310 has a digital out on it. So my suggestion is based on that.

I would also dump that entire front stage and go with either a really good two or three way setup.
