What can we do to get this place to be SQ central?

I can't call you names and hurt feelings until after I get the DAC1 back...and Kevin is supposed to (or said he might) send you a P9 to convert to coax for me.
Can't talk back until those come home...lol.

Are external / in-line DACs coming back into vogue in SQ? I remember when DAC-in-the-Box used to be a popular add-in with the home audio community & there were some high-end DACs for car audio too. But, I thought that many manufacturers were working to make their head units w/"beefier" DACs.
Do they help out with the AAC / MP3 / WMA files that many people use on their media players & port to their head-units or CD-Rs?

Well I been here for years now. And SQ has never been a strong point. Still my favorite forum.
I think we need more driver discussions. I know it's better to go out and listen to drivers......and yes some people may be more opinionated than others....... but discussing some reveiws of some drivers or sharing hands on knowledge instead giving blague responses might yeild more participation. (Is that one sentence )
Again I really do like this forum. People here are great. But I love SQ and I'd love to make this the happenin place.

Ber, that DAC is for my home system. Jeremy has already modded a Bel Canto DAC2 for me and is working on some super cook stuff for the Benchmark DAC1 I have. But no, I wouldn't think there would be much help for those formats once they have been converted and compressed. The big thing that holds the iPod back from a serious SQ source unit (or what I've read on the home forums) is the volume control more than the DAC section. The DAC section (again from what I've read) isn't bad, but it's not the be-all-end-all of DACs. So a lot of the home guys like Red Wine Audio are making new volume controls and might be doing DACs for them too.
It is hard to do driver discussions without buying the drivers, building the optimal enclosures, making the optimal crossovers etc...and having some test data wouldn't be a bad thing either. If you are wanting a load of driver tests and test data, the best place for home audio speakers would be Zapaudio's site.
For car drivers we would have to work on that one. If there was some way to wrangle some drivers and send them to a few folks who you know and trust for listening, then that would be the best way to do that.
Any ideas?

I think a lot of manufacturers put better DACs in purely for marketing. They added a buck or 2 in parts then could slap a "24 bit DAC!!!!" on the box. When that good DAC still went through the same horrible analog stages that the old DAC went through.
A good DAC (and associated good analog stages) could really only improve lossless formats IMO. Anythign that could be returned back to the original datastream by use of DSP or processor. Most of these units have built in decoder/DAC combos so you really don't know what is going on inside them.

What is the address of the Zapaudio site you speak of? The only one I found from google was only available in languages other than English. I took a few french classes but I am not fluent enough to understand everything
I've been an SPL guy for a long time but due to one of my co-workers SQ past I've learned a lot and established a genuine interest in sound quality. I'd be glad to be a part of building this forum up as the information central for SQ. Perhaps we could get Gary and Mark as well as some of the other big names in here from time to time.
