In my mind, here is what it comes down to:

You build an install around the RF 650--it is a 20 year old amp---it breaks. Your install is F'd. You have to tear it out, send it off to the one person who can fix it, wait for him to return it, and then pray it doesn't break again. You also pray it doesn't COMPLETELY die (like burn through the circuit board).

You use Zapco (or any new amp), if it breaks you ship it off on warranty--or over the counter exchange it. Easily fixed, easily replaced.

I had older RF amps this year. When they started giving me problems I was completely screwed. I couldn't just go buy another one, or have it fixed immediately. I switched to Genesis for reliability and servicability if it is needed.

The RF doesn't bring anything positive to the table in this instance---but it does bring a $hitload of potential issues.

I just so happen to have the Oct 1991 issue of Car Audio and Electronics where they did a full test of the major 5 monster amps from that era: Rockford Fosgate Power 1000, Orion GS-500 Gold, Precision Power 2350DM, Linear Power 8002 & HiFonics Colossus. The RF Power 1000 came in overall 2nd.

Here is the run down on the Power 1000:

Rated 125x4 at 4 ohms and 250x4 at 2 ohms.

It was 150x4 @ 4 ohms. The Power 650 was 'rated' at 125x4 @ 4 ohms.

The power supply of the Power 1000 was "so noisy that the A-wtd filter of the AP test was saturated."

From CA&E: Noise & Distortion were very low.
A-wtd noise at min/max gain (dBV) was -85/-73 with the latter -73 in bold indicating superior performance and the -85 in range with the others. The other feature in bold compared to the others was the Input required for rated power at minimum gain (Vrms).

I would argue the test done on the Audio Precision machine would be more accurate than the test done 8 years before that one.

I know who Fakuda is, and I know what he's done...but damn. that was 15 years ago.

Sorry dude, but those amps are noisy and nowhere up to the standards of a modern amp.

If you want, I can get you in touch with a guy who repairs the amps, and he can tell you all about those old amps.

very informative -- please read the previous statements. Instead of feeding misinformation, like you've got the habit of doing, I actually gave my opinion on the matter based off personal experience.

as far as my "ownage" ( [Roll Eyes] ), i'll leave that up to the mods....'cus this isn't the first time one's had to come in and "correct" your comments. if not blaitantly tell you to quit chiming in where you obviously don't belong..

Mark Fukuda used Alpine 3555's on his front stage. The RF 1000's were just used on his subwoofers.

EDIT:

Note the front stage amps.

As far as my firsthand experience with the power 650; Nice amp, LOTS of power, great for subs, when hooked up to mids and tweets= didn't care for it. Almost every one I've come across has had glitches. (intermittent odd little noises, finnicky channel etc..)

If the 650 was connected to mids and it did work great= It was very loud but a bit harsh. Which is acceptable (for some people) if you are looking for sheer loudness, but that wouldn't fly if you are looking for a true SQ amp.

I'm not bashing the 650. I am a fan of nostalgic equipment. But if you are looking for an amp thst is geared towards sq and that has power as well as finesse, I'd steer towards the Zapco.

And really, until you do a true A/B comparison you can argue all day as to what you THOUGHT was a great piece of equip.

just my .02

Then tell me why the RF Punch & Power amps from that era are still respected to this day as being great performers in overall sound.

BTW, it is much more than nostalgia, because I can hang great & surpass some in my class to this very day in both SPL & SQ with my 2 RF Punch 150's from 89.

What organization have you competed SQ in? Which shows? Regardless of amps, I don't see you "hanging" with anything with 6 coaxials and 4 Radio shack piezo horn tweeters.

Nostalgia and price are exactly why people keep using those amps---no other reason to do so.

Where is this "mis" information [Confused] I am talking straight up.

I actually gave my opinion on the matter based off personal experience.

What are you talking about? Saying "RFVega got served" was because Winslow gave info from a test article putting down the 1000 and your immaturity was to immediately say that. I bet when I backed it up with my own test article, you said "Winslow got served". [Roll Eyes]

as far as my "ownage" ( [Roll Eyes] ), I'll leave that up to the Mods....'cus this isn't the first time one's had to come in and "correct" your comments. If not blatantly tell you to quit chiming in where you obviously don't belong..

Post a link from a post thread to better prove your accusations from a Mod in that certain area. If you are referring to the Shane scandal in 'Buyer/Seller' and the comment by Steve (who is a Mod, but NOT there), I did have a legit gripe and I proved it even if it was not on-topic.

If anything, the Mod's here should 'correct' your comment about "RFVega got served". Think it but do not post it. For better proof, all you have to do is compare my 'most recent posts' to your's and see who is more grown up!

That's just it. There are not enough that still run them in competition anymore. Believe me (and others that have heard it), the RF Punch 150's still have it to compete with the majority of todays comparable Class A/B amps in both SPL & SQ. [Wink]

Lay off, Deaf! FYI, I met Brantley at a local sportsmen show for boats and he was there representing Elite. They do audio for home, boats & autos.

Take your hating somewhere else, because I DO NOT need it!!!

Like I said before, all someone has to do is compare my 'most recent posts' in profile to your's to see who is the real game player here.

BTW, do not take someone's negative comment from another thread and use it against me in a completely different thread.
