At the shop i work at i can get zapco for a really good price, and i was wanting to do all zapco, BUT i have an old rf power 650 that needs some work done to it.

Should i use that which is like 325rms x 4 i do believe or get the zapco 360.4???? which i think is like 90x4

325 a channel from a Power 650? Power 1000s weren't that strong.

The Zapco is a cleaner sounding amp and would have a warranty.

if you've got all the old rf gear, i'd say go that route.

If not, keep it on the shelf and +1 for the zapco.

I love old RF stuff...and those amps were known as Rockford Fuzzgate back then. Subs, they would be cool...but I wouldn't put them on my mids and highs.

It is a very well known fact the RF Vintage Old School amps were VERY underrated & could easily put out double the 'stated rated power'.

Here is the 'stated rated power':

RF POWER 650

162.2 watts/channel x 4 into 2 ohms
125 watts/channel x 4 into 4 ohms

I did read a post once where the Birthcert for the RF Power 650 is:

359 watts/channel x 4 @ 12.6 volts.

RF POWER 1000

250 watts/channel x 4 into 2 ohms
150 watts/channel x 4 into 4 ohms

Again (from a post), Birthcert for the RF Power 1000 is:

508 watts/channel x 4 @ 12.6 volts.

I don't know where you heard that from! [Roll Eyes] Those Punch & Power amps from that era were GREAT for both SPL & SQ. I am certainly not the only one that can attest to that fact! [Wink]

I saw it stated in a post somewhere, but do not remember.
They did not show the actual Birthcert.

The actual Birthcert can be found and proved though. [Wink]

I heard it with my ears. Those amps aren't good sounding at all.

And what are you going to do when they break? I know of one one person who fixes them.

I wouldn't use them on mids and highs, but what do I know?

I just so happen to have the Jan 1999 issue of Auto Sound and Security where the benched the Power 1000 against the then new Power 500.2.

Here is the run down on the Power 1000:

+/- 45 volt rails.

Rated 125x4 at 4 ohms and 250x4 at 2 ohms.

It did 680x2 at 4 ohms actual power at .04 THD. Which is abou 320 a channel at 2 ohms, and about 160 a channel at 4 ohms.

It drew 200A of current to make those numbers.

The power supply of the Power 1000 was "so noisy that the A-wtd filter of the AP test was saturated."

20-20k unwieghted noise floor of -86dBW

The amp and a 45 degree phase shift at 40 hertz.

But yeah, other than that stuff, they are great amps.

And there is no way in god's green earth you are getting 300 watts a channel at 4 ohms from a Power 650 if the Power 1000 could barely do it.

The facts don't lie.

RF does under rate their stuff but not quite to the extent that everybody seems to think they do. My amp susposedly does 50x4, it ended up testing 58 instead, sure a little higher but not to the extent that the fanboys and marketing executivies say they do. If you are happy with your punch 45 DSM then be happy, but seriously though, accecpt the fact that there is better things out there.

As much as I like old school RF, I would not mind switching to zapco in a heartbeat if I had the disposable income to do so.
