Considering the JL 1000/1, but have been told to go with something better....I looked at the Zapco and it's more power, but the damping factor and s/n ratio seem to be CONSIDERABLY lower. I was looking at the C2K9.0X - 2200 watts at 2 or 4 ohms. I'm shooting for the best SQ I can afford, but I do like it to hit HARD. Opinions please.... Martin

I'm not sure what the diffrence is But JL rates the 1000/1's Damping factor @ 50HZ while the Zapco is rated @ 1Khz I am sure if you check them at the same Hz you would find the Zapco to be cleaner.

I love my 1000/1 on my 12W7 as I have said before I think I have the Perfect amount of overhead, I would think the 13W7 would want a little more power though.

As far a Class D amps go the JL's are fantastic, the Zapco's are class A and will draw alot more power, and they cost alot more.

You ask a tough question [Big Grin]

Myself personaly, I would just do the 1000/1 on the 13W7 (or 12W7) and save all that extra cach for another day. although that Zapco should sound better, I don't know if it would sound over $1,000 better to me.

If you have the charging system and the cash go you can't go wrong W/ that ZAPCO [Smile]

I wish I could think of some other options, but there isn't much out there that can throw down solid, clean and clear power in the 1000-1500 watt range at 3ohms (I asume you will run it @ 3ohms for SQ)
Perhaps a Mmats 2500D.5? 2500WRMS @ .5ohms [Big Grin] and run it a .75 all day [Big Grin]

PS. PM me if you want to sell off your 500/1

That Zapco is not Class A, it is a Class T, I believe. You will not find a 2200 watt Class A amplifier.

You will get more power with the Zapco, and even if everything was equal, I would go with the Zapco for that reason alone. Both are great amps. Zapco will give you more power and no one would argue that it will alter the signal in any negative way. Just a great powerful amp.

They were Class T for a while...now they're D.

Supposedly the tripaths were unreliable/unstable and unrepairable. I guess since they're D now there was a little truth to that [Confused]

or two 1100watt Zapco Refrence series amps [Big Grin]

T is/was a class D variant...same thing.

I wouldn't worry too much over S/N ratio, damping factors, etc.

Class D amps by the nature of the design have low dampening factors...but you'll never hear it...so don't worry about it.

I doubt the zapco would let you down.

But then again, the price difference between the 9.0 and 1000/1 might be a hard pill to swallow.

Also, 9.0 is a full range class D. (hybrid of some type)

i've got an arc audio xxk 2500 powering my 2 10w7's....even though recommended power is 500 watts a sub i seem to be doing fine w/ this amp powering the subs at the lower end of their recommendations. there's definitely nothing wrong with high wattage going to speakers.....but i've always thought it's a bit odd for jl to have such high recommended wattages going to their subs. 1k watts recommended for a 13w7? these drivers are not that much less efficient than other subs (ID as one example).

you definitely don't see these kind of recommendations for home speakers (ok, well this is some dated info...it's been probably 5 years since i was a regular reader of stereophile)....velodyne & carver's company sunfire (not even sure if this company is still in business) seem to be some of the few companies that have very high wattages of their amps....i think that sunfire sub has like 2k+ watts going to it. when you look at amps from krell/mark levinson/etc they don't have this kind of output....i think those levinson no.33's are 150-200 watts a channel and those have been one of the reference amps in home audio for as long as i can remember.

but i expect there's probably some reason that home vs. car speakers have such differences....dealing w/ the environment of a car (extreme cold and heat) may have something to do w/ how the speaker is built but I couldn't imagine this would be the reason for such deviance in recommended power.

or maybe i'm totally wrong and have no idea what i'm talking about [Confused]

Automitive stereos need to handle more power & play louder because they need to battle road noise and wind noise, and there are alot of losses in all the misc. pannels and seats and all of the other crap in a car.

A HT systems is placed in a totaly silent room, and in most cases there is nothing but the Monitor, speakers and the listening position.
