I have one. Read the instruction manual. Then read it again. Then just start playing with it. Jeff Smith is the 701 guru. He knows thing that unit can do that would take you forever to figure out on your own. Read the manual.

Well, So far the only good thing about it is that it has 5.1 . BUT, it has so much processing that it kill the dynamics of the sound. I still have my Eclipse 8443 (8V) and i have to turn the gains on my amp 98% DOWN because i am getting a "hiss" from the processor. I am running 800 watts rms @ 4ohm on my front stage and i cant get it "loud" If i turn the gains up i get hiss. If I had a smaller system like some 50x4 amps, i dont think i would have enough power to get good volume out of this processor. I am getting ready to add a line driver after the processor to see if that helps. Alpine also said it works better if you have one of their decks that has "media Expander" on it. Really so far it has been a royal pain in the ass. My installer is no "slouch" either. He has been rated top 3, top5 and top 10 installer and install team in the country a few times. He has even called Alpines Tech support and they dont know crap!! They tell him to call this one tech guy from Alpine, but he never answers or returns messages.. This processor really killed my Dynamics. Thank God i have lots of head room power wise or this would really suck a**. I will try to put up some pics of my install later on today..
let me know if you have any questions..
Aaron H.

To get rid of the hiss, turn down the PMI. It is set at +5 from the factory, and I would turn it down to -5. That should get rid of the noise.

Yep, tried it. Had no luck. We have gone through the manual thousands of times. This hiss only occurs in Dolby pro logic music and movie mode.
Thanks for the help though!
I appriciate it.

Please explain?
What i am saying is the output sucks and the sound is just not the same. it sounds like going from CD to Tape.
Does not sound as Detailed.
I am new to this so i may be wrong here.
I think its both.

How about I ask one question first - Is the only reason you have the h701 because of the 5.1 processing?

Well that was what i was looking for, was something good with 5.1 well we (my installer and I) found this and it has lots of extras. He Has tried Passive networks for 5.1 but is not happy with them.
But while buying a processor, why now have (guessing) 158 bands of EQ.
Why, whats up?

It's located in the DVD or 5.1 section (can't remember). It is set at +5 from the factory. With it at +5 I had some minor hiss. Jeff Smith lowered it wo -5 and the hiss was gone---with no other negative effects.

Well i talked to Alpine again the other day. They think my Eclipse deck may be causing the hiss due to its high signal to noise ratio. I am going to swap it out with an alpine and use the "Data link" cord and see what happens.

Well, Alpine decks have a higher signal to noise than my Eclipse. What decks are you guys using with this processor?
Thanks

I'm using a Clarion DRX9255 and have used a Clarion 1060.

A noisy eclipse deck? I'm not shocked.

Talked to AudioControl today and they said they have tested the Eclipse 8V decks and took readings of 1.5 volts rms!! I want to find a Alpine so i can use the "Data Link" cord..

I've seen them bench out at the rated voltage, they have strong preouts.

There are quite a number of models though that are very noisy...I don't have the list as the model I ran just happened to be dead silent. The AV8132

How much processing power do you actually use from the unit? Would it be feasible to switch to a different 5.1unit and use the HU's dsp?

I guess you have to question how much time and effort you're willing to put into this thing to make it work. It, obviously, could be a small silly problem or it could be something more permanent...what will it take for you to hit your limit and switch to a alternate unit.

I wish I could help you but I've never used this processor

Well, We (my installer and I) this is what we have tried so far.. PMI -5 to +5 no effects. Line driver after the processor, did same as turning my gains up. It added "hiss" This Thursday we are going to try a line driver after the deck-before the processor. We are also going to try a Alpine Deck in place of my Eclipse 8443 Just to see.
I am Open to do anything to get this right. If i have to Yank this Alpine processor out to get it right, I will yank it and put it on ebay. If i change it out for a more basic processor, i will need a/some EQs. but i have a few lined up already.
What are your suggestions? I had this whole system already in place and then added the center channel speaker (Morel 4"mid and 1.25"tweet" and processor and the stage is unreal BUT now it just sound like crap.. Sounds like/worse than stock speakers with the equivelent(spelling?) of stock volume with deck maxed out.(i have 800 W RMS on front stage).
Please and thanks for helping.
I also compete in USAC SQ and need this solved by Finals.
