Ok, here's the situation:

I am installing front speakers on my brother's 97 cavalier. Originally, there were 4x6 speakers in the front (YUCK).

So, I purchased some CDT 6.5" CL Braxial Speakers.
Installation was quite difficult, because they were both too deep and too wide for the door.

I proceeded to make a 1.25" baffle out of 2 pieces of wood (3/4" and 1/2"), with a hole cut out for the speaker. This was mounted on the door.

Now, however, when I goto play these speakers, there is a terrible buzzing/fuzzy sound out of any mids/mid-bass. It almost sounds like a blown speaker (it is brand new, with minimal deck power on it). Highs, etc sound fine.

Has anyone worked on these cars? Are these doors simply too ridiculous to try and seal properly for infinite-baffle type speakers?

Directly above the speaker, there is another hole in the door about 5" x 4" large. I tried it both open and covered with cardboard/duct tape, but either way it still sounded terrible.

Solutions? Should I revert to a crappy 4x6? or go with a slimmer 6.5" and adapter plates from best buy?

I haven't hooked up my amp yet, but I don't think it will help any - it seems the seal is quite bad. I have been told to go purchase some weatherstripping to better seal the 1.25" baffle to the door (use it as a gasket), but i can't see how it would make a tremendous difference.

PLEASE HELP.

Thank you.

I think the cones hit the door panel when they play...that's why they sound horrible...

try them with the grills on them...

I had the same problem when I had a cavalier...

Well,

(a) my speakers didn't come with grills
(b) they are about as tight as they can be against those doors.

In addition, I'm pretty sure that I tested them before putting the door panels back on, but they still didn't sound right.

Stupid cavalier doors and no room to work.
other ideas?
