here is the problem. i love the clarity of component sets, but they just dont keep up with spl systems. i had 2 sets of the JL 653cs's but they wouldnt keep up with just 4 12's sealed. i am running 6 15's ported now in a wall and i need loud highs, mids, and midbass but i need clarity also. we had the utopia's in our comp car but i never tried them in with a spl car to keep up. some people say that horns are the answer, while others say they dont sound as good. some have reccommended brands like vifa horns, id horns, kove ep60 midbass woofers, etc. i need something that will get loud and stay clean. please list ideas and where to get them from. used is also good too!

Kind of like SPL, you need cone area and power. I am guessing that accurate audiophile sound is not your goal, but instead you just want a loud clear front end. No concerns about staging, imaging, etc.
I would look at horns. image dynamics, USD, Veritas and Illusion Audio. I would also look at large midbass (10" size--USD, JL Audio, JBL Pro), or several smaller midbass. 2-4 DD Audio 6 1/2's per side. Feed them all with as much power as you can afford.
In all honestly though if you had two sets of 3 way JL Audio sets up front and that still wasn't loud enough for you (assuming they were powered appropriately), I doubt you will ever have what you are looking for. I can't imagine a 160db front end stage. Unless you just installed a PA system for a front stage and that would keep up maybe.
It would probably be easier and more effective to just turn down the bass when you are listening to real music, and then be able to switch to SPL mode for contest.

i had a alpine mrv 1507 to each set, so the power and headroom was there, i also had depth and staging and imaging, did quite well for sq in the tbird. but now i got the truck with a wall and i am less concerned with perfect imaging and staging, however i am and always will be hooked on pods, its so much nicer! i have heard that horns have great staging also, so i could go with the horns under the dash and kicks for mids and midbass. plenty of foot room in the dakota. where are some places to get some good deals new or used? looking to get clean and loud. power isnt a problem.

For Image Dynamics--I will let Winslow guide you. Although there is generally a lot ID stuff on ebay--but I'm not sure what ID might say if you needed some warranty work done.
Although, like I said above you are not going to find a 160db front end outside of a PA system. Just not physically possible--and why would you want to? Girlfriends may nag--but it is nice to be able to selectively ignore them.

Here is what my suggestion is for a good sounding front stage that gets extremely loud:
Horns under dash 10" high efficiency MIDRANGE drivers in the kicks, such as the PHL 3860 12" or 15" high efficiency midbass driver in each door. Such as PHL 4040 or 4050.
Run 100x2 to the horns, 350x2 to the midrange drivers, and 500x2 to the midbasses, and you should have an EXTREMELY Dangerously loud system that can sound good at low volumes where music is still music
If you don't care about imaging or staging much, you could just pile a bunch of coaxials or component sets in each door. I would think 4 6.5" sets in each door would be pretty crazy as well.
