I have a Focal Utopia 33wx. I was told by a guy who designs boxes for Focal that a sealed box would be the best for SQ. But I have had a ported box and it sounded awsome and loud. I have a strictly SQ setup so should I go with sealed or would it be worth it to go with ported and get more bass since I am only using 1 sub. Either way I go he will give me the design for the best box of either ported or sealed , it's just up to me to decide which one I want.

I would port it myself. Think 1.5 cubes tuned to 33 Hz would be sweet with that sub. You could upsize to 1.75 cubes but you might get a little boomy on the low end. You could seal it, but you'd be wasting a lot of low end, and I don't think there would be any improvement in SQ, if not a degradement.

Here is a simple way of looking at things. Most home audio and hi fi companies use vented enclosures for their subwoofer system. Vented, (as always stated: when designed and executed properly) is inherently more precise as the cone has to move 1/2 the distance that it's sealed counterpart does to generate the same output at the given frequency. Less cone travel equals less distortion. Kind of a very easy and hard to argue way to look at it. Consult those who know how to apply it well and enjoy it.

I think if you are going for sound quality, you should probably go with sealed.

I tried using a ported enclosure with an sq setup, but I found that the sealed added a lot more to sound quality.

well too late tacomaboy. I had one of the engineers at focal design my box based on my car and amplifiers being used. So it should be awsome.

i would go with sealed....with a ported you will get the initial sound wave and then a bit later you will get the one from the port that is a bit later adding a bit of a boom and it holds onto the sound a bit longer.

also lots of high end (and i'm talking really high end) subs come in sealed
