Alright, im just getting started (just got my van a month ago). For now I have some Pioneer TS-A6985 4 way 6x9's in the dash... and some Memphis power reference 4"s in the rear... I unhooked the 6"s in the back doors... Im working with a sh*tty pioneer head unit (for at least a few more weeks)... Ive never been REAL big on SQ... but it seems that my ears have been getting pickier and pickier... but anyways... Im gonna do everything right this time.. (but with extra extra bass )
Starting up front.. I know I'm going to get a nice head unit (undecided yet).. I'm going to rewire Everything to get the cleanest sound possible.. I'm on a semi-tight budget... I would like to get by spending $300ish on front speakers (but if needed I'll surely spend more). Im going to go with new speakers but used amp/s to power whatever I choose to get...
Should I try the newer Pioneer TS-D690R's?? Ive been hearing nothing but good about them. Or should I go components? Or even both, 6x9's in the dash and 8"s or 6.5"s in the door and tweeters??... Im really confused as Ive NEVER been in a car that sounded "Really" good.. I just know that theres better than what I'm hearing... and I dont have the time to try to track down a car show/sound off..
Any help/suggestions/comments.. woud be greatly appreciated.

With 300 to spend, my suggestion is looking into a 2-way 6.5 inch set and making kicks for them. I'd look into some home audio drivers, and have Madisound make a custom crossover for them. For a great price, Vifa makes one hell of a driver. There are many other companies as well, but Vifa always sticks out to me when I think of great pricing for great quality. Another option is pairing some Digital Designs DDW6.5s with some nice tweets, which is definately an option.

alright, I think ive thrown my "wanting to keep the speakers under $300" wish out the window.
Im now thinking of; 6.5 component set up front, and either 2 8's or one 10 for midbass in the middle console that im building (between the 2 seats)..
should i utilize the space in the dash for speakers? I could probally fit 8's in there with some modification, my dash is gettin hacked up anyways.. with midbass, whats the frequency where you start hearing more instead of feeling it more? All this new found information on imaging and staging is making it even harder for me to figure out where i want my stuff, whatever stuff that is *lol*. And ive got plenty of space in any direction to work with...
Im going to start out with a new head unit, and whatever speakers and amp/s I decide to get for the front. This will be within the next couple weeks (as soon as I figure out what I want to get).

Ahhh....the "return" of SQ+. I second Ryb's recommendation for Vifa --- I run a pair of 8s w/Infinity's Poly-cell tweeter @ home off of my Onkyo (100x2)...very warm & natural, but can get loud enough to make Iced Earth truly rock-n-rule!
Macrom/Morel is another good option. I've heard good things about Dynavox as well. Madisound & Parts Express are two very good sources for low-priced mid/hi-fi gear.
I've not run the DDs yet, but from what I've heard Ryb & the others say, I'm willing to give them a try....
I'm not a huge fan of oval speakers for SQ...nothing wrong with them per se, but I tend to use rounds if possible. A "simple" 6.5" adapter plate over the 6x9 holes would allow you to use 6.5" comp/coaxials up on the dash. I'm not quite sure how an 8" mid-bass driver would sound firing into the dash, but that would definately help with the up-front-bass *big evil grin*.
Doh....meeting time.....good luck dude!!! Listen to these dudes here, they know their schtuff!!

I really wouldn't reccomend running midbass drivers in your center console. If you run them as subs then possibly, but not as midbass. Hmm, I would start with mids and tweets in the kicks, and then maybe run some midbass in the dash, if you can them separated enough, like one on each end of the dash. A couple of 8s up front running as midbass/subs would be sweet if you could get it right.
