Do these peices have a place in a serious SQ rig? I have searched for posts on them, read reviews of the unit, but what I have turned up is so mixed. Some people love them, others despise them. Anyone here have some firsthand experience with them?

it depends on what your using it for, if you like a lot of old music with little to no low bass then you'll love it, if you have modern CDs the effect will be lessened but still be there. if your using it in a SPL rig and you can get the res. freq. then it can also help

actually, I do listen to a lot of old music. So have you heard one? Do they really do as they claim for older recordings?

ok, then one last question: is the older or new version significantly different? I know they have the difference cosmetics, but as far as what they do is there a difference and which one would you recommend . . .

I bought an old one off of a recomendation from a very knowlegdable freind. He told me there is a difference, I just dont know what. As far as hearing a difference I have never listened to another system with one so I wouldnt know. I can tell you I like my Epicenter.
You could always try calling AC and ask them what the difference is.

if you email ac, they are generally really great about responding quickly to any questions you may have. i have the epi, an esp-2, overdrive, dqt and dxs, and i am completly happy with all of the products. it makes a huge difference in the amount of bass, especially older stuff. and it acts like a nice boost to the newer stuff, kinda similar to a bass cube, but way better in my opinion. much better for sq.

I have an AudioControl Epic-150 in my car, which is basically an epicenter with a built in volt meter and spl meter. The meters work well, but the bass restoration portion of this unit is very nice. As was stated earlier, these units breath new life into older recordings that lack bass. It also works well on todays music. A lot of todays pop music seems as if it were engineered to sound "good" on anything, a car system, a boom box, headphones, etc. but not sound "great" on anything. These audiocontrol units will put the punch back into these songs. Though I am a sound quality guy, I can still hop my subs really nicely with this unit. It has allowed me to break out my collection of older recordings and enjoy them with an extra kick. AudioControl makes topnotch gear, i believe you will be happy with it. After I got mine adjusted, i was very pleased.

pink floyd will get even lower and louder than usual. i love mine. it puts bass up front on ur soundstage aswell. so it will help you get the bass up front as its needed in sq systems. in works very great i think you will be pleased with it.
