Well let me try this post here since I have gotten no response in the general forum.

I was wanting to get opinions on this unit. I finally got to see one first hand and see how it works. The "demo" I was given was kinda of short though. In a cars enviroment not a sound rooms how does this unit seem to stand up? What are your opinions on this unit both good and bad. Thanks!!

Personally, I dont like to have delicate mechanisms like the one used in fold down face radios, tv's that pop out of the dash, in dash changers that use cartridges, or any of the other variations of mechanical marvels that sprout up from time to time in the autosound business. Just personal opinion. I feel that not enough CAN be done to keep such small mechanisms operating properly. Seems like it only takes one little "oops" to strip a gear or shear a pin or stip a worm. Maybe if they had a way to do this kind of stuff manually, it'd be more reliable. Not saying these things cant be done well, they most certainly can, but to really do it right requires metal gears and whatnot that the general public is not willing to pay for. It's all in the engineering I guess, but it seems not enough attention is paid to making it all reliable, only in making it work. My .02...

Well you do make a good point there and I have thought about that. What I was looking at on the Kenwood was that it does pop the screen from the dash but you manually have to flip the screen up to the desired viewing angle. Unlike the CVA-1005 it all automatic.

Thanks for the input!

i have looked at both units, but only in a showroom. I like the alpines sliding maechanism for the reason you mentioned, but i also like the convience of the kenwoods in dash cd. i think i would lean towards the alpine unit because i like the display slightly better than the kenwood (it seems a little busy). but has for holding up in a car enviroment i can't comment (which is really what you are asking and i just realized that ).

do you think the video displays for both are comparable? i did not have the chance to look at a movie in the kenwood model, but i was impressed with the image of the alpine.

I believe that LCD screens in a car are pointless. They get washed out by sunlight way too easily to be of much use, except in a vehicle like a van with tint on the rear windows. Of course, if your driving that van, you wouldn't want the radio in the backseat...

Well sqhopeful..I like the Alpine cause it is automatic...BUt that is also more to break. I like the alpine ok. But I like the Kenwood interface more. But you are right it does seem busy compared to the Alpine.

Also audiophyle..I have thought about the sun and the display also. Kenwood said it supposidly had some kinda of glare protection. I am trying to find someone that has in in their car. I did find one person and they liked it alot. Were very happy. But I like as much info as I can get.

Again thanks for the input.
