I have been to a few shows that the sensors have a piece of cloth or foam over the opening to the sensor. What is the purpose of this? It is consistantly 0.5dB lower than my Term-Lab USB that has no cover over the hole.

For the past several months we have been shipping sensors that include an acoustically transparent foam filter that covers the opening on the bottom of the sensor.
This filter protects the sensor from contamination and dust. It also prevents someone from trying to tamper with the sensor during measurements.
There should be no change in the SPL measurement. If your meter is reading differently, you should check your K-factor settings. You should also try placing your sensor in the vehicle at the same time as the other meter to verify that there are no differences.
