How much is it just to get the activation code to just run the multi screen.

The multi-monitor feature is part of the Event Promoter Pro upgrade which sells for $149.99.

Does the upgrade provide additional hardware? How would one connect two monitors(1 for each lane) to a laptop with a single vga output?

The upgrade is software only, you can get hardware for multiple screens at different places. I did a search a while back for it but don't remember much.
