nicely ask them to meter it....
they may or may not have a meter... if they don't, then they can't even prove you were breaking the law...

Good point. I would also ask which weighting scale they are using.

all tests done in a street car at 150 t/l db sealed up on the dash.
garage #1 64-66db at lot line approx 10" from garage
garage #2(the garage the cops came to) approx 80-83db 10" from garage on the lot line.
my conclusion is db is garage dependant. garage #1 was a smaller 2 car and garage #2 is a 3 1/2 car. both non-insulated. garage #1 connected to house. garage #2 detached. garage #1 would have been consistant with any noise ordance, garage #2 would have been deemed illegle.
after further studing of the city ordance that said 71 db, any noise that was a tone or impulsive in nature need to subtract 5db. so 66 was our limit.
watching tv at normal volume was about 55db. a human laughing was about 60 db.
in my city, basicly if you do anything louder than laugh at the lot line, you are in voilation of a noise ordance.
there were provisions stated for allowance of use of power tools or items such as lawn mowers.
all test results are courtsey of SOUND MEKANIX SPL DESIGN TEAM.

I've got a 2 car shop thats attached to my house which is fully winter insulated. I decided to do the same tests
With the door closed, a customers truck that runs 145's all day long meters at 52 db at the street. In fact, you can hardly hear it at all - its more the vibrating of the house than the bass The street is about 25 ' from the garage door.
I would agree that insulation helps a lot - the above test proves it. Luckily I have yet to have someone complain...
