I recently put 4 12's in my friends ranger and we can't get the tailgate to stop rattling, someone told me I could fill the tail gate with spray foam. Will this work? Does anyone in here have any other soulutions to stop the rattling.

It depends on the source of the rattling. I have tried the expansion foam before and had more problems with the foam (rust, frozen locks, etc.) than it was worth.

If it matters, I used four cans in the rear door of a ford explorer, and had a hell of a time getting the door open the next day. It never rattled again, though. I fired two Vega 12's right up against the door without the trim, and she sounded tight. Still is.

You need to find the exact source of the noise before you take measures against it. The Expand-a-foam is the last resort.

Is the rattle coming from inside the tailgate? The door itself? If you have to foam the inside of the door, get inside and use tinfoil to cover everything that moves so that it dosen't plug up your door latches, etc.

Who says I need to use the same brand?

Yea the rattling is coming from in side the tailgate. Do you know how I would get inside to wrap everything with foil.

If it rattles inside the tailgate door, I'd be scared to try to get inside the gate. Usually (Every one that I've seen) the tailgate is one piece of sheet metal that has been wrapped around a structure of "ribs" that give it form. I've never personally attempted to tear into one, therefore I don't exactly know how the system works.

bobejuice,

the box is right behind my seats, it is a wall and I have about four feet of empty bed between the box and the tailgate.

I presume you have the woofers firing backwards in the ranger. The rattling from inside the tailgate may be from the latch assembly possibly the window slide(don't mess with it too much). an easy solution would be to replace the factory cardboard from the tailgate, with some 1/2 MDF (carpeted of course).

bobejuice,

It sounds like a good idea, when I get a chance I'll try it out, I'll let you know what happens.

Just a word of caution..

You might already know this but you normally don't want to put house insulation in a car, because if it gets wet, it will stay wet for years, causing rust in the long run.
