What is happening when a Sub makes an odd popping noise. It only happens when I fool around with ultra low test tones 10-18hz. I think it's bottoming out, but I figured I'd ask the experts.

It depends on the type of sub. Most current subs cant actually bottom out, due to their design. If a VC actually bottoms out hard just once, the speaker needs reconed to repair the damage done. Most subs WILL make popping/slapping sounds even if they aren't 'bottoming' out. These sounds, from the suspension being pushed beyond its limits, aren't as hard on a sub as the voice coil crashing into the backplate, but you still need to avoid running a woofer that hard at that low a frequency. It can only lead to trouble.
