Ive been trying to figure this thing out for quite some time now. I have 4 perfect 12's and a MMATS D200hc with an yellow optima top battery. I have 4 guage wire running from the battery to a distribution block, then to a 1 farad cap, then from there it goes 4 gauge to the MMATS and 8 gauge for the Xtant (highs).
ok ...now the problem. On constant bass songs (bass cd's etc.) im extremely happy with the performance, but on music like electronic rap etc (most music i have) where the bass "hits" it drops the voltimeter, on some decently loud volumes kills the music temporarily everytime the bass hits.
could it be i need a better alternator (mine is 90 amps) and if so.....which amperage? would 130 do? or if i can afford it should i go w/ an ohio generators one at 200. could it be that i have 1 rusty connection on my negative terminal and an 8 gauge ground (dont ask why) should i upgrade to 2 guage or thicker wiring? or is 4 suitable?...... is the amp heating up?!?! i have no damn clue...and i've been tryin to figure out what to do
please help.....ANY response is much appriciated.....thank you

A new alternator would definitely be a good thing, especially if your running amps to your highs. Some people think that they aren't bad for your electrical system but they are worse than sub amps. When your subs hit it isn't usually constant, so when the amp pulls that current for a second or so it pulls, say , 90 amps or so and then lets off for a second, meanwhile your alternator has been recharging your battery and/or caps. Everything above about 80 hz or so is drawing almost constant current in most types of music hence, draining your battery and your alternator can't recharge it quick enough.

Look closer at the ground connection before you get a new alternator, it is typically the weakest link in the charging system. Some manufacturers will have a single 10ga. wire for their entire vehicle. try upgrading all the ground wires from the battery to the engine block, each of my vehicles have a 2ga ground connection, a noticable improvement over the factory 8ga connection.

true that on what Mabeita said, new ground from the battery to the car, if you have an internally regulated alternator, run a 4 gauge lead from it to the battery.
lastly....did you charge your cap properly? or has it been discharged?
