OK, I think I've found the limit on my 9515, 2 shredders.

I have a 9515 in a 4.0 cu. ft. box with 42 sq. inches of port tuned
to about 36 HZ. At high volumes the 9515 starts to distort (meaning it's bottoming out).

My question is can I redesign my enclosure somehow to limit
this bottoming out? Would decreasing or increasing port area
control the excursion better?

How about tuning higher or lower?

I crave more and more BASS.

I dont know if it would help your bottoming out problem but someone on here does, but you have way too little volume for that sub and way to little port area if you want all out SPL. I think that sub should be able to take those amps if you fix the box.

i would suggest downloading WinISD Pro....the excursion graph is quite accurate considering this is a freeware program.....input your parameters, box volume, tuning frequency, port dimensions, and input wattage......tons of graphs to analyze output, including excursion graph

is this for daily driving?
That might be a little much
you might be giving it 3000 or more watts RMS which just might be on the high side.

You'll probably blow it pretty soon if you are driving it full tilt. I have two D2s on my 9515 for daily driving, and blew it running it full tilt with music. It's just too much power for it for continuous playing. I had a very similar enclosure as well.

drop the tuning to 30hz and drop the gains on the amps 1/4 turn.

see if that helps

increase your port length to 24" or lower your port area to 32sq inches and keep your 16" length

Distortion has nothing to do with blowing drivers.

i think that more port area will provide more resistance to the cone..... 41 square inches is kinda small for such a large sub with that much juice going to it....

Have you hit your head,Distortion will melt a coil in the form of heat faster than clean high power.
