I need some advice on using the spare tire well for a sub enclosure. My objective is S/Q, and the vehicle in question is a sedan.
I plan on running one 12" sub - likely an Image Dynamics IDQ 12 svc.
What I am wondering is;
1) Is there a difference in performance between this type of arrangement and a standard "box" - assuming that all things are equal (box volume etc.)?
2) Imagining the enclosure to be an oval shape, should the sub be positioned in the middle or to one end, or does it matter?
3) I plan on running a ported enclosure. If the port length required is longer than the enclosure is deep, is it ok to run the port in an "L" shape, even if the shorter end of he "L" is the end that vents out of the enclosure?
4) How thick should the fiberglass base of the enclosure be?
All advice welcomed.
Cheers!

1) No difference, assuming both enclosures are correct and sturdy.
2)Doesn't matter in most cases.. Whatever is better for cosmetics.
3)Fine, just be sure to account for port displacement in the enclosure dimensions and make the internal port end 1 diameter away from and enclosure wall if possible for less chance of turbulence and mis-tuning problems. Otherwise elbows are fine..
4)I say 3/8-1/2 an inch should be plenty for a fiberglass base.

Blu, I love spare tire well boxes! Generally, I've found they "hookup" better to the car, meaning you get a little more kick in the pants! This comes with a price though, get ready to do some rattle resolution! Oh well, they work great overall, and I am in total agreement with Buzz's answers! I like 3/8" fiberglass!

STILL waiting to hear a GOOD pair of HLCD's!!

I appreciate the input. I guess that a can of "Fix-a-Flat" and a membership to C.A.A. (Canadian version of A.A.A.) is a good idea too huh?
What is the proper method for calculating the "Port Dispacement" in the enclosure? This may be an elementary question, but I have never built a ported enclosure... I want to do it right!
Cheers!
