Hi,

I am interested in a new Focal's 5"(FIVE) sub.
At least Focal promotes it as a SUBWOOFER.
I am a bit puzzled and do not know is this driver ment to be a real SUB or a sort of compromise for very small cars that do not have much free space available. Has anybody got any experience with 5" Subs?

I will very much appreciate if somebody could help me to figure out is it really a sub that plays like a sub?

I will also appreciate if someone would be so kind to calculate the best box for them (2 pcs per box in isobaric load possible?).
The idea is to get the smallest SQ bass box possible!

Here are the driver's T/S parameters:
Driver / Focal Audiom 5WS

Fs - 44.6 Hz
Re - 5.2Ohms
Qes - 0.38
Qms - 5.51
Qts - 0.36
Dia - 4.13 inch
Mms - 14.8g
Lvc - 1.05 mH
Xmax - 0.217 inch
Vas - 0.32 cu ft

Nominal power handling - 80 W
Max. power - 160W
Impedance 5 Ohms
Sensivity (2.8V/1m) - 87dB

Thank you.

I had a pair in my old honda, in the front doors, in .18f3 ported boxes, tuned to 45hz(dont really remember tuning now... Ask Dukk..). Anyway, they sounded awesome! I dont know that I'd do them ISO, only because you already have a tiny box, and because they're 5", not a ton of output, and doing them ISO would just lose another 3dB of that little output. Just do them vented and have a nice day!

STILL waiting to hear a GOOD pair of HLCD's!!

If it dont fit, force it... if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway...

Cheers, Audiophyle.

What I want to know for sure before I buy them is that if I built two ported boxes with a 5" sub in each box (or 2 x 5" ISO per box), I will not want to have any 10" or 12" sub because there will be quite enough bass for a well sounding system that is not missing anything!

If you question is to the sound quality of these subs, they sound really really good, however, they are just 5", so, in my car anyway, I had a pair of 10's to really bring in the bottom end. These subs are best suited for helping pull the bass upfront, but I dont think I'd run a system with just these and no BIG sub, they just dont have the output.

I have heard one car with these subs in it. With no other subs playing the music sounded full and rich with nothing missing, however when the volume was turned up the 5" lacked the authority of a larger subwoofer. I would definately look into putting these into your car, but I would also supplement them with a good 10 or 12.

The stock stereo in my '88 Firebird Formula had the Performance Sound package. While not on par with aftermarket systems, it did have an factory amplifier. This amp powered two 5 1/4in "subs". These speakers were mounted in a factory ported enclosure accompanied by two 4x6in speakers. It sounded pretty good for a factory system and had reasonable output at low freq., it even had a gain control for the amp in the dash!!
