I am currently running two 12" RF XLC's (4ohms each) off of a RF power 500a2. From my previous posts, I've learned that the amp can push a lot more power, and I'm not really happy with my sealed box. I'm thinking of building a new box ported box, and getting a third 12" XLC. The space between my wheel wells in the trunk is 35" which isn't enough for three 12's so I'm thinking of building a pyramid shaped box kinda like this
____________

Sub --- Sub --- Sub
Does anyone have a better idea, and should I wire three 4ohm subs in parallel of series?

3 4ohm 12 would bring to down to the 1ohm load range and below. And thats kinda hard on even a RF amp. I would recomment getting 2 more and wiring them series-parellel.

I would love to get 2 more, but I have know Idea where I would put them... Im not sure my trunk is big enough for three.
By the way... This is a daily driver, so I need to retain some trunk space. :-)
What if two of the 12's are 4ohm, and one is 8ohms???

How do you have it wired now? You should be getting big power out of that amp right now. 2 4Ohm subs in parallel would give the amp a 2 Ohm mono. Build a ported box for it and you will be happy.

I don't know why you would want 3 subs the wiring would not work you would get either .75Ohm or 12Ohm. And 4 subs would give you less power out of the amp but the surface area advantage would give you a slight edge over the loss going from 2Ohm mono to 4Ohm.

I would stick witht the 2 you have make sure you have it wired 2 Ohm mono and port a box for them. JMO

alright folks
one thing youre forgetting is that ohms arent constant
they change
I.E
the rockford triple ten enclosure runs right at 4 ohms in its freq. range.... and they have 3 4 ohm subs in it i think
double check to make sure
but the amps always work with this setup
no theyre not 12 ohm subs or anything like that
i THINK theyre 4 ohm... all 3 of them

Punkin out with a killer system.
sXe all the way!

We'll even though you are right about a speaker being a changing load. I did not forget about it. The manuf. rates a speaker at a nominal load. Which for music listening is what you should go by. If your setup is for SPL only I would take into account impedence rises at your note, and wire for most power.

And the Triple 10 box has 3 8Ohm woofers in it with a nominal of 2.67 Ohms. It doesn't have 3 4 Ohm subs. That would not work in a normal case with their amps.

By the way, the box plays a huge role in the impedence of the sub. So a good box speaker combo is a key to getting the most power from an amp.
