Hey guys...I just got me a nwe car (GS400) and am in the process of putting my system together. I just purchased an Arc Audio 1500dr, so the subs will be seeing 1000W @ 2 ohms mono. I'd like to run two sealed 12"s facing the back (there is a ledge in the trunk that would be just perfect for the box...enough room for sealed, but not enough for ported) I have about 3 cubes to work with total, so, like I said, sealed is probably my best bet. How would a pair of the RE SE's sound sealed off of 500W RMS each? I hear about their ported applications all the time, but not much about them sealed. What other subs should I be looking at? Price isn't too much of a concern...I'm thinking maybe ID MAX v.3's also. Brahma's are appealing, but 500W each isn't really enough to make them shine like they should. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

if money is not really an issue and you want it to be loud and still have excelent SQ and you want to get the most from your 1000 watts I would suggest a single RE XXX 12" in 2.5 - 3 cu ft ported tuned to about 30hz you can get 1 12" for $369 direct from www.respl.com that would be hard to beat with your space and power for a SQL aplication for a little more SPL you could go with a DD9512 in 2.5 cu ft tuned to 35hz but this would also cost you more the DD9512 is $449 direct from www.ddaudio.com either one of these setups will be louder than 2 12's of any kind in sealed boxes and sound just as good also they will use slightly less space only 2.5 cu ft versus 3 cu ft for the 2 sealed also 1 12" at $369 is cheaper then any 2 12's unless they are under $185 which there are only a few good quality subs at that price such as the SE 12 adn E12k from elemental designs so I would suggest 1 12" RE XXX or DD9512 for best resaults

The car audio world seems to be shifting from light weight, efficient woofers, to back breaking, dump all the power you and your buddies have onto it, big shiny woofers... Myself, I see nothing wrong with this. Power is available, and cheap, and subwoofer technology has never been better. With that said, we jump into the review of the massive Resonant Engineering XXX 12" woofer.
Upon receiving the woofer, my first impression was "Damn... this is a fricking massive sub". Weighing in at just under 57 lbs, this woofer isn't for the faint of heart. The XXX line is RE's top line offering, and its designed for those who want gut wrenching low end, without sacrificing quality sound.
Build and Features
The RE XXX 12" begins with a standard Venezula style 4 legged cast basket. This basket is the standard design for literally hundreds of woofers, and it allows a good amount of spider clearance rearward. The cone is a thick pulped paper, which is rather stiff, and when complemented by the nearly unbreakable 6" dust cap, its extremely stiff, which is perfect for the driver. Forward compliance is given by a 1.5" half roll foam surround. While this large surround does decrease the radiating area a bit, it's needed on a high stroke driver such as the XXX. Rearward, the XXX uses a stiff 8" progressive spider arrangement. This keeps the large coil moving in a linear fashion. The coil is a quad design, 3" diameter, and 4 layered. Each coil has a nominal impedance of 1.2 ohm. Connections to the coils are made with gold colored push terminals, which in turn, are connected inside the sub, by 14 ga wire leads on the underside of the cone. Finishing up the woofer, RE uses a huge motor, with a 2" thick top plate, and a 5/8"ths thick back plate. The magnet is a dual stick, which is 8 and 1/2' in diameter, and 2" thick. Build quality is very competent.
Data
Here is a full list of data I received from RE, as well as efficiency, Bl, and Mms, which were not included.
Sd: 480 sq cm (74.40 sq in) Re: 1.0 ohm Vas: 31.61 l (1.12 cuft) Mms: 218.43 g Qms: 5.19 Fs: 34.4hz Qes: .49 Bl: 10.62 Tm Qts: .45 Xmax: 33 mm one way (email RE for clarification on this) Efficiency: .25% ( 86db @ 1w/1m)
Test Procedure
The XXX was given a proper burn in, to release the suspension, and to burn off any excess glue on the coil. This involved around 10 hours of a 25 Hz sine, with enough power to reach full stroke. The woofer was loaded into a sealed and ported box, which was placed into a 1994 ford escort hatchback. Using my standard stable of tracks, I evaluated the woofer for its listenability, and performance. The woofer was then tested for maximum SPL in both enclosures. A Linear X pcrta was used for all measurements, with the mic placed 26" above the driver's side seat, to simulate your ear position in car. Power was supplied by a pair of Cadence z9000 amplifiers, which are rated to do 800 watts into a 4 ohm mono load. Crossovers were set to 70 Hz, with an 18 db/ octave slope.
Box Designs
I use LspCad to design a sealed and ported enclosure, which are optimized for the woofer. The Sealed box was .75 cuft in volume, and this gives the system a .707 qtc. The ported box was designed for SPL, and was 3.5 cuft, with a 43 Hz tuning.
Performance Sealed
The XXX 12" sounded damn fine sealed. The woofer reproduced the intro drums to the Eagles' "Hotel California" without a problem. The rolling drums in Limp Biskit's "Rollin, Urban Assault Remix" were dead on, and loud. Even with tough classical, the woofer stayed clean, and accurate. The woofer is a tiny bit muddy and soft in the midbass transition area, but since we are discussing a SUB-woofer, a good xover slope, and capable midbasses will lessen the problem.
Overall, the XXX is pleasing to the ear, and has tons of low end energy sealed.
Performance Ported
This woofer is LOUD ported. Since the box is SPL optimized, the listenability went down a fair amount, but you get a ton more output for the loss. Accuracy isn't up to snuff with my test tracks, but if you're into ground pounding on the streets; this is the way to go. With a lower tuning ported, this woofer could be unbearable with a ton of power...
SPL Testing
I've already outlined the details in one of the above sections, so let's cut the BS, and post some scores!
The Resonant Engineering XXX 12" is the loudest woofer tested for Momentum, and the longest stroking woofer as well. Overall, the XXX is a very capable woofer. It can sound good, it can rip your head off, and it's the best of both worlds, in one package... albeit a damn heavy package.

yes they will but so? if money is not an option and he is limited to 3 cu ft dont you agree that 1 xxx 12 ported would be a beter option than 2 se 12's sealed? what is your opinion RE-Tard

Re-tard...thanks, I guess I forgot to ask what impedences the RE SE series are available in...I couldn't find it on their site. So I guess they are dual 4 ohm only huh? Are there dual 1 or dual 4 ohm XXX's? Don't worry, you dont have to explain wiring to me, I know what's going on there Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

the XXX's are quad 1.2ohm coils so it can run at 1.2 or 4.8 ohms im not sure if the 1500d is stable at 1.2 ohms it says on there sight its 2ohm mono stable so I dont know you can however get a digital designs 9512 in dual 4 ohm so it can be run at 2ohm to match your amp. also i just noticed where your from im in yorba linda too right near the corner of yorba linda blvd and rose if you need any help with intall or anything let me know

he RE-tard i just noticed on the pic in your signature that the XXX you have there doesnt have binding posts on all 4 basket spokes is that a pre production dual VC model or something when I e-mailed RE they said only quad 1.2ohm was avaliable
