I tried this and found I got a noticable SPL increase, it blew my mind, never thought it would turn out this way but it makes sense. Check it out http://www.teamrocs.com/technical/pages/aiming.htmPosts: 36 | From: South Africa | Registered: Oct 2003

I don't have any graphs to back up my story, but I found the same results as that guy did. I also found that if I open my trunk while listening to music, the sub distorts pretty easily. I'm guessing that because of the decreased pressure on the outside of the cone it is excurting too far. I have an Image Dynamic IDQ sub and the XMAX is only 13mm. I was worried that maybe the sub was still distorting with the trunk closed but I couldn't hear it. So I hopped inside and closed the trunk. The distortion went away.

I would just face the box forward and seal it off from the trunk. That way you eleminate the cancelation problems and still have some of your trunk left.

In a word it's called "Wavelength". Freq / speed of sound. as for sealing off the bootspace(trunk), the only way (in a sedan) is to fire the sub's output through the rear parcel shelf, by ducting the woofer's output, or directly mounting the cabinet to the rear parcel shelf.(sometimes you have to cut, but be sure to re-inforce structural integrity, the metal on the parcel shelf keeps the roof from collapsing in case of roll-over) firing the subs through the rear of the back seat will not work to get max wavelength.
