For a ported enclosure will half the sound energy come from the front of the speaker cone and half from the port? or is there significant loss inside the cabinent before the port?

I was always told that half the sound comes from the front of the cone, and the other half comes from the back side of the cone, not from the port itself. The port only is to tune the rear wave of the cone. That is what I was always told anyway....

If it dont fit, force it... if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway...
