Well? Anybody looking to get into motorization, what do you know about controlling your motors with a computer? How about switches?

What veteran motorizer has used both and finds one preferrable?

For computing, was there a particular interface card that was better than others? Anybody use a "basic Stamp" module to do this?

Switch layouts.. problems, advantages?

Lets say you wanted to motorize a "stealth-izing " face plate cover for your deck.. How would YOU do it?

Any crosstalk with long throw actuators and electronics equipment?

I've done a couple of ways, none of which involve a 'puter to time. I've used switches like a garage door opener, and I've used cap/res networks to time. I've also done a couple that were completely contolled by alarm remotes and a couple that worked solely on momentary switches. I preferred the garage door opener to help make things, ummm, how you say... "idiot" proof???? Of course, it dont work... they still manage to break stuff!!!

I like the big fat switches they sell in parts express. It's just so much more satisfying than buttons and stuff.

THACLICK. ahhh.... THICUNK. ohhh...

Audiophyle, Have you ever worked with 555 timers? What about mercury switches. I "tried" to control linear actuators where as I pressed one of the auxillary output buttons on my alarm remote, the 555 timer would start and count the time for the actuator to extend. I used mercury switches to keep the actuator from over extension. Hey...it worked once, but the motor got real hot and stopped working. I don't know if I screwed up the wiring, or the motor was already bad... but I got so frustrated that I ripped the whole ting apart and went with a momentary switch. Good Luck and God Bless.

I never thought about the 555 for this purpose.. I used one for a motorized RDAT that slid out of the dash on ignition, and back into the dash on ignition off, I dont see why it wouldn't work with a transistor to switch the high voltage. I wonder if your motor was getting enough juice? The mercury switch is a good idea, unless your parked on a hill!

Hmm the timer idea sounds pretty cool, agreed on the mercury switch.. How bout just an open voltage contact for a double throw relay to cut off the juice to the actuator instead of the mercury, but keeping the timer?

At the time, I was trying to do too much at once (SPL,video, neon, moving amp rack, lighted scenic display). I learned my lesson. Do one thing (ok,maybe two) and do that one thing well. I will not attempt the linear actuators right now (it does not increase SPL) but if I find a way of adding as many accessories to increase SPL, you will see my vehicle LOADED with actuators, monitors, neon, flashing lights, and anything I could sqeeze into the vehicle. Good Luck and God Bless.
