Transmission line enclosures: What is the difference between a tapered vs a non tapered design. Discuss amongst yourselves. [Smile]

With a transmission line there are basically three different types. Imagine two parallel lines running horizontally. On the left side is a straight line where the driver will mount. (that makes three sides) On the other end it is open. There is your basic non-tapered transmission line.

Now, if those two lines are not parallel, meaning that as they approach the opening they get closer together (kind of like a triangle on its side) or farther apart (kind of what you'd imagine as a mild horn flare) then the baffle that the subwoofer is mounted to, then you have tapered transmission line. One is a positive taper and the other is a negative taper. That is a quick, boring, and simplified response as to what the difference is between them, but doesn't go into the actual effects of each design as that is a very large subject to get into for a forum.

I can't argue the applications for them because the only transmission lines that I have ever worked with have been non-tapered.

A small negative taper design is what I have found prevalent in most home audio setups. Vancey did a sweet job analyzing them in the newest edition of the cookbook (which is like 100,000 years old and this counts as the billionth reference to it on this forum, I think)
