Topic: Difference between XXX dB.A SPL and XXX dB.SPL HELP???
I have herard companys express SPL scores as XXX dB.A SPL. What is the "A" in XXX dB.A SPL? Which is the truely correct way for expressing sound pressure level? XXX dB.A SPL? And if so is there a space between SPL and the A in XXX dB.A SPL? [ 03-31-2005, 05:04 PM: Message edited by: Sayar Kuchenski ]

The letters are the "weigthing factors" Microphones don't measure just like our ears hear, they are in many cases capable of higher bandwidth and roughly flat sensitivity. A weighting either counts less, or filters out, extreme top and bottom end frequencies to approximate the human ear. C weighting takes off only the extremely low frequency readings. Unweighted is the straight number. Take your pick as to which one you think is most important, but really weightings shouldn't affect most applicable SPL scores.
