Drop the panel under the steering wheel, mainly phillips head screws. Lower the glove box, 2 screws behind there, drop the center piece also. All will be phillip head. You will see 4 8mm head bolts holding the "Assembly" in. Loosen those and pull the radio out. The whole AC/rradio thing will come loose. Unhook all the plugs and your good to go.
Kit is gonna be a American International HON-K828 and a Metra 70-1721 harness.
You can use the factory pocket if you wish and skip the kit, but, I reccomend the kit.

Wow, thats alot of work for taking out a deck. Any idea how much a stereo shop would charge for parts and labor? Also, i heard about if you take out the factory radio in the Civics the keyless entry would be disabled, i don't have keyless entry but is there anything else that might not work by taking out the factory deck? thanks

With the right tools, you should have the deck out in about 5 minutes. I work at CC and we charge about $50 for a radio install, plus parts.
Uhh, what year was yours again, and where are your AC controls in regards to the radio. I could have sworn you said yours was a 98.
The locks and domelights were a factor you had to worry about on 96-97 civics, but, yours isn't in that range.

Its a 2002 Civic LX 2 door. The air knobs are up and down on the left side of the radio and storage bin, same as the 2000 and 2001 models.

cool. My wife drives a 2001 Civic...ALOT easier to work with.
The plastic piece under the dash with the cigarette lighter...pry that off. There will be 2 8mm bolts, one to the center and one towards the passenger side, take those out.
Push from behind, it's gonna be hell, but it's the safest way, and the whole black panel will come off, including the radio.
Yourr kit number will be a a Metra 99-7879 wiith a 70-1721 harness. Nothing will be affected with the removal of the radio.

Cool, I was wondering the same thing, cause I am going to be putting my girlfriends system in her '01 civic very soon, and this information has helped greatly. She doesn't have an after market HU right now, and I don't know if she's going to get one, but I was going to use the factory radio, and use a line convertor, spliced into the rear speakers, andun the system of the factory deck. When my pioneer was stolen, I had my system running off my factory radio and it didn't sound bad at all. The Civics have a nice factory radio too, the components in the front adds to the quality of sound aswell. It would be nice if she could have an amp on the highs, but I wasn't going all out, she just wanted a little bass, so I hooked it up, and got her some subs and an amp, and she's happy.

There is a way to bypass that by connecting some wires in a harness behind the deck, but off-hand I don't remember the colors.
Good-luck...dave.
I think the wires are green w/ red stripe and green w/ black stripe if I remember correctly
