On another board I mod on, www.jspeed.ca, I've started a new section,Car Audio Junkie of the Month....
And here's This Monthes....
And BTW...This is written for folks who still think Rockford subs are the best...so please undestand...and feel free to come over to the site and pay a visit..Just keep in mind, you have to registar to get to the audio section..Hope to see you there)
This monthes Audio Junkie of The Month is Team RipRock from Didsbury,Alberta.
Team RipRock consists of the twin brothers Mike and Mark Regner.
Starting back sometime ago, as many do, they started with a crazy system in their daily driver and began compeiting in the local competitions.
As years went by the moved their way up through the ranks of dB Drag to the grand daddy of SPL competition...The Extreme Class..
Using their former daily driver, an 89 Honda Civic hatchback, the twins quickly fine tuned their skills as competitors, box designers, and masters of creating systems to competite not only on the local and national scene, but on the world level as well.
(This pic taken by current owner,Martin Riley, who has the car for sale again...) [img]
In 2002, the brothers became the loudest dB Drag team in Canada with a 173.8 db on the orignal TermLab SPL sensor, which has been since replaced by the newer, more advanced TermLab Pressure Sensor.
Through the following years, they became more and more serious about competiing, and began to build more detailed and better calculated enclosure designs, as well as spending huge amounts of time testing and tuning....Hours on end...sometimes days on end...and of course, setting new records for Team Canada SPL.
In 2005 Team RipRock sold the famous Civic and went to build what would become a vehicle that would be watched by Extreme Competitors world wide....
The 89 Trooper II....
Using all their knowledge and input from the Civic, as well as some very closly guarded info from fellow compeitors around the world, The Twins would create the loudest vehicle on Canadian Soil EVER!!
On May 27,2005 at the Driven to Perform Show in Calgary, the Brothers Regner would enveil the monster and set a new Canadian record at 171 db!! An amazing number indeed, but one that would not last for long...
In Castlegar,BC just a few days later, the twins would up that record, maybe by only a small amount with a 171.2dB, but in the world of SPL, even a .1dB can be the difference between a win and a loss.
Over the next few monthes Team RipRock would reset this Canadian Record more than once, topping out at 172.3dB. at Kelowna,BC on Aug.28.
But this wasnt what Team RipRock was after....Sure, the Loudest Canadians Ever title was nice, but the brothers ulimately wanted the big title....Worlds Loudest Extreme 2 Vehicle.
After Kelowna, they went back to the drawing board, and began building, testing, tearing down,building,testing....Many sleepless nights....
Finally came the big day they had worked so hard for....World Finals!!
The guys has been to Finals several times before, but never managed better than a 5th place....This year, they were going for 1st!
During the trip to Clevland,Ohio, towing the 9000lb++ beast, they knew there was something just not right....and unfortunatly, how right they would be...
After battling numerous technical problems over the first couple days, such as bad RCA cables,a deck that wouldnt run right, and unstable line drivers, they finally got a number in testing that would put them into first place in the final round....and no...I can't share that number....
Elimination rounds came around.....Would this be their year??
After pulling the Trooper into the lanes and getting all setup, they hit the pause button......Nothing!!Turn the volume down and try ramping it up.....Nothing!!
A quick look in a window showed that all 4-4000 watt amps(FYI:This is about less than half the power that most Extreme teams use) had gone into protection....A crushing blow to such a journey...
One more try in the last few seconds of the 30 second run...turn the volume to 00 and try turning it up from there....But at volume 2,the amps went into protection again....
With a 172.7dB score in qualifing, this got them anothr 5th place trophy....good...but not great in their eyes.....
By the way, to give you an idea of the number they hit in testing that would have given them the 1st...The first place trophy went to Team Edge Audio with a 173.8....
And if you didn't notice, thats only a 1.1dB range between first and 5th.....
Team RipRock, within 2 days of their arrival back home, had already removed, replanned and rebuilt the enclosure of the Trooper....But at this point, they are still waiting for repairs to subwoofers before they can test....
Mike and Mark Regner aka Team RipRock aka The Twins have shown the drive and ambition rarely seen in any form of sport/competition...The "Never Die" attitude only belonging to people who do what they do,not because they have to...but because its what they want deep in their soles....
Along with the entire Canadian car audio world, Team RipRock we thank you for your undying devotion that keeps SPL,dB Drag, and car audio in general alive and growing in Canada!!
Ladies and Gentlemen,Your November 2005,Car Audio Junkies of The Month.....
TEAM RIPROCK!!
