There are slots for 100 competitors at this years finals. We invite competitors to the Finals based on the points they have accrued throughout the season. A competitor's geographic region or power class is NOT part of the equation we use to determine eligibility for the Finals.
We keep inviting competitors until 100 agree to attend. Ideally, the top 100 competitors on the leaderboard would all RSVP. However, not everyone will be able to attend the show. When a competitor in the top 100 declines to attend, we offer his/her slot to the competitor in position 101 on the leaderboard, and so on.
We have been sending out invitations in groups. The first group of invitations (50) went out several weeks ago. The reason these invitations were sent is that there is no way that these top 50 competitors could get "bumped" out of the top 100. We have been sending out 10 or so invitations per week since then. The cutoff date for 1999 is September 19. Beginning Sept 20, all points accumulated will count towards Y2K. We will continue sending out invitations until we get 100 participants.
Next year, we plan on inviting 300-500 competitors to the Finals!
Hope this answers your question.
