Moving this out here to get a reply. I know this isn't exact science or anything, but I used the formulas from here:

http://www.concept-intl.net/download/dB_formula.pdf

And if you need to figure out HOW to calculate your true power output:

http://www.concept-intl.net/download/measurwatts.pdf

Now I know this isn't going to be the best thing to do, but it had me wondering what my equipment would test at according to this and the meter.

I just tested what that article said and surprisingly it was accurate to .1 db to what it was actually metered at. It leaves me with a question though, I did two tests.

Test #1

JL 10W7
Rockford 500.2 @ 3Ohm
Max A/C Volts - 74, 74 * 74 = 5476/3 = 1825 Max power

but, 1825 * .707 = 1290 which is supposed to be RMS

That amp cannot be pushing that sub with 1290 watts RMS can it? The formula came out to 141 dB which the blazer was metered at 140.9 dB.

Test #2

2 Kicker 12L7
Hifonics Brutus 1606D @ 1 Ohm
Max A/C Volts - 47, 47 * 47 = 2209 Max Watts
2209 * .707 = 1561 RMS which is really close to the rated 1600 Watt RMS of this amp.
Comes out to 147 +-3 so 144-150 dB.

This is in a '99 sonoma that has not been metered yet. I would say closer to the 144 side is where I'm hoping it will be anyway.

Is there something wrong with my math here? How can that rockford be pushing the JL that hard?

I used to try those tings way back in the day. But soon realized the only thin that matters s what you can do any given day at a show.
Till then its a crap shoot.

But if you want to do some math get an amp clamp and a volt meter to find out actual watts your amps put out burp after burp.

Yeah, I wasn't really too concerned with what the spl was supposed to be. That first one just has me puzzled.

Now you realize. That isn't an accurate test. Because you don't know imp rise. THe only accurate way to get a true wattage is clamp on amp meter and volt meter. One problem from my memory is the higher ohm you wire the higher the voltage will read while at the same time the lower the power will be. Just an est. At 1 ohm the amp puts out 50 volts. now wired at 4 ohm it may put out 80 volts. Yet the amp puts out much more power at 1 ohm. I can't recall the technical behind it. Example. The old kole I had with the clamp on tested approx 22 amps of current and like 45 volts ok.Wired 1.33 ohm with imp rise to 2.05 ohms as you see from the math. Now if I just took the voltage as done. 45x45 2025 peak watts. X.707 so 1431rms watts. But by using clamp meter and voltage meter(100 percent accurate)comes out to 990 watts RMS. See the difference. Using the method stated shows almost an 50 percent increase in measured wattage.

^^^ But at the same time - I'm to blame because I'm the one who introduced these articles over here on the forum to begin with.

Im a kicking myself in the arse now for it though.

I didn't expect it to be perfect. I have the clamp meter at home, I'll have to wait until I get home from school to see what I actually get.

Perfect..... Umm I understand that... But that isn't even close to par for testing. Depending on the ohm.You could have a 2000 watt amp 1200 watt amp test the exact same ac voltage
