talk about a challenge, i need a system for my barracks room. i am stationed overseas in okinawa japan and the $30 computer systems with a 6.5" midrange speaker labeled a "subwoofer" just isn't cutting it for me. rather than spending $700-$800 on a home theatre system that's not all that impressive i rather just turn a car audio system into a home theatre system of sorts. i have used computer power supplies before to power my subwoofer back in the states when i was a civilian with great success, so i want to do that here. pretty much this is what i've been thinking as a general layout for a system:
cd player - something that has an output and an auxilarry input
front speakers - some type of coaxial, i'm thinking some 6 x 9's put into boxes i could buy off the internet... they would be powered by the cd player
amplifier - anything that's cheap as all hell but puts atleast some kind of power into a subwoofer and doesn't blow up the next day
subwoofer - a 12" sub... i don't need digital designs or re here.. just something the will put out a bass line and sound smooth and hit relatively hard... remember i'm in a barracks with neighbors.. a 12" pyramid sub will hit harder then the 6.5" subwoofer i have now.. well who knows, lol.
i also need the power wire, speaker wire and subwoofer box included as well..
total wattage for the whole system has to be around 200-300 watts so one good computer power supply can power everything..
this is probably next to impossible, but i figure there has to be one of you with some good ideas. i want some sort of sound quality with this too.. lol. a lot to ask for! but if any of u have any ideas i would appreciate the help! merry christmas all!

Well a 300 watt computer power supply is the total wattage the supply can output into 1.5v, 3.3v, 5v and 12v, so you'll have to make sure the 12v output is enough(like at least 20A). You might be better off buying a real bench DC power supply like this guy...I have one and I bought it used from eBay for $55 shipped. 35A continuous into 12~15v.
For a CD player just pick a cheap Pioneer deck from eBay like this...they're cheap but still have a bunch of features.
Either build your own boxes for the 6x9s and the sub or just buy some locally. Be sure to use a ported sub design since there won't be walls to reinforce the bass. The total is just under $400 but after wires and such it will be a bit over your limit, but this is a brand-matched system and it should serve you well.

On a second thought you'd be better off with a integrated amp, two tower speakers and a media source like iPod, since optical lens can get dirty really quick in the desert.

lol, i'm in japan not iraq.. but an all pioneer system doesn't seem like a bad idea. at the px (the wal mart of the military) they have all kinds of pioneer stuff, and there's no taxes on anything. so that might be what i'll do. thanks!

yea i'm on okinawa, japan, it's an island way south from the mainland of japan. it's really nice here. there's are nissan skylines everywhere, i could have gotten one for free. lol. but shipping them back to the states costs a **** ton of money, plus you have to mod a few thingss on there to make it compliant and what not with the u.s. also, toyota supras are aound a lot too and are relatively cheap for a nice right hand drive supra. i mgiht get that and ship it to the states.
