Ive been around these fourms since my my freshman or sophmore year thru high school. I been spamming threads such as "which is better", before I even had my damn car. Well I got my car two years ago and first thing I did was put my first system together. You can see it below..... it came out GREAT IMO. But the whole process was fun. I did everything in my car/system myself except for the box which was custom made by Spkrman.

Im a current Pharmacy major but Ive recently had a change of heart. Ive been thinking of a few things that I love to do. I throw party in Chicago and make a lot of money doing so. Thats has lead me to believe there something in the marketing/promo field I can do. But I love car audio.....

Sorry for my damn life story but had to give you all a bit of a backround on me. I really want to know the process of getting into the car audio field.

Are there any schools or classes that can be taken so that I can get a job at a shop?

Is there a major/minor that car audio/development and technology falls under?

Im not just talking about install but I want to know anything you all can tell me about someone who makes speakers, amps and etc. Like working for a company and such.

If so plz help me out?

Any suggestion or help would be great.

I would love to hear from any1 who would love to help someone get into the field that this forum was made a around. Ive learned so much from being on here over the years and Im addicted to it now that im trying to upgrade my system.

I didnt know what forum to post it in so I put it here for the most help. Sorry for any errors or typos but Im ina rush. Thx

Im looking into this as a second or third job/hobby/skill not as my number 1. But I would really like to know how to get into the field. Im prob changing pharmacy for some type of marketing since im great at it and its fun to me. Pharmacy is kinda, very, really boring but I just so happen to eb good at science and math but I do hate math alot.

I've been into car audio for almost 6 years - since I was 14, and have been in the industry for about 3 years. I've also been competing in DB Drag for 2 years now , hope to rly get serious this yr. It's a ton of fun - I love my job and spl competition as a hobby I work at a shop in Norman, Oklahoma, I go to the Univ of Oklahoma and I'm and Elec Engineering major. Don't think it probs helps you but its just what im doing [Smile] If you wanna get into the industry just find someone who will give u a chance to work for them than learn from experience.

And finally, one last quick comment - dont do something for the money - do it because you love it. Check out the college of engineering at your university, they are always very nice ppl and will give u plenty of info on what you can do as an engineer. If you can deal with the math you'll love the rest I promise - just put up with the math so you can understand the rest [Smile]

Well... As an installer for 3 years (1 @ Best Buy, 2 @ Circuit City) here's my 2 cents: If you start doing this as a job, you'll get really good at it, but it will also lose most of it's appeal - you wont want to be doing the same thing at home that you're doing at work, I guess you could say. BUT, you'll get great deals and have access to a huge knowledge base (hopefully) and probably nicer tools than you own or can afford.

I'm in Denver. There's a school, Pickens Tech, that will train you and set you up with CarToys. I'd use that as a last resort. Try Best Buy first - their turnover is huge. Then try Circuit and Ultimate, or whatever chain stores you've got. Make sure you know your stuff when you go in there, you'll probably be talking to the install manager. Make sure you're enthusiastic - you've got no experience, so you'd better have a damn good personality.

As far as the technology goes, Audio Engineering. From what I've seen it's not a commonly available degree. With that you could set up live sound, mixing, mastering, etc., and yes it would apply to car audio speaker design. Read Vance Dickason's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook. Great book, and he's an AE.

btw, Don't let that other thread turn you off. Like I said, the key is that they have and opening, and somebody likes you ;-)

I went to school to learn basic car electronics/12 volt stuff and learned some install stuff. I work at Circuit City installing now and I love it. Although I love what I am doing I am looking to take classes for something bigger. This is mainly due to the fact that I am only 19 and have way more in front of me, but if you are looking to do it as a 2nd job by all means go for it! It is a lot of fun for me at least and a great form of extra $.

I personally don't get tired of doing it making me not want to work on my own car, because at a place like CC you mainly do basic installs, like satellite radio, decks, maybe an amp here and there. It's not like you are building SPL cars all day, so it is almost like 2 different things. The knowledge and experience are well worth it though! Good Luck!

Oh yeah, I had a TON of doubts before committing to going to school and actually doing it. It is all up to you man. If you really want to do it who cares what anyone says. I had people telling me to stay away because I will get bored with car audio and won't make enough money. After all was said I just said screw it and committed. I couldn't be heppier for the time being. I don't think I want to do it full time until I am 60 years old, but thats why I am going to school for hopefully engineering so I can move up. If you are in college for something that will make you $ in the future, then why not do some audio stuff while you are in school, and as a part time thing after your out of school? Some guys I work with have big $ making jobs and work part time installing because they enjoy it.

installer = dirty, sweating, close to the floorboard inhaling funk from peoples shoes,no airconditioning...

pharmacy = no sweating, access to many drugs, in airconditioning, scooping pills into a bottle is as physical as it will ever get...

if you change your life plan to be an instaler i will slap you myself [Smile]

ps...you should build a speaker box before you come to a complete conclusion, you just may hate it...

if every car were brand new and the install bay was air conditioned...i'd love it even more

At my new job every car is new [Smile] (well pretty much) I do dealer work so its all adding rem starts - keyless - power windows - power locks - cruise control - etc. a lil audio every once in a while when a walk in customer comes in. Ive been there for almost a month now and I love it - much better than the past places I've worked (Best buy, a few local shops, and altamere), and it pays better. Every car except the one or two walk in customer cars every now and than has under 200 miles on it - and yes my bay is air conditioned [Smile] Only thing is I HATE Toyota Yaris's (Sp?) now - im doing f'ing power locks with keylesses on 4 of them and theyre cable locks [Frown]
