If you put a DD Z in a street box that is tested with a "conventional" sub, it tends to peak higher like you experienced. (I had the same when I switched from a 9912 to a 99Z12)
Problem is if you are going away from the box tuning, internal pressure is much greater and can cause a surround or cone to blow.
This in combination withe the "difficult" box like Tim said here is probably the cause of the ripped surround.
You have to adjust the port to the frequency respons of the Z sub.

Also take into account that the Z sub has a very high impedance rise. You will get less power from the same HU settings than with other subs.

to see wich sub is loudest u must build 2 boxes and test each box for each sub
