I can only guess.

Maybe to move the equipment from the back of the car to the side, maximising length in the box and moving the mic spot technically further over.

I think the SA DD car was similar but didnt go as far forward.

looks like he had used the square wall peice as a jig to get his loading wall perfectly square with the rest of the box, because we all know using magnets sucks.
