I am thinking about competing in the street 3-4 class this year, but I have a serious question concerning the battery rule for this class. Is it my understanding that I can use an aftermarket battery in the factory location. Does that mean a direct factory replacement or can I use a larger battery that does not use factory battery box but is still mounted in the factory "location?" Also if the lager batteries in the factory "location" are allowed then can the battery in the second location be the same size or smaller than the battery in the factory "location."

Batteries may be replaced with a larger battery provided the replacing battery fits in the OEM location. If there is a battery box, then the replacing battery must fit in the battery box. If there is a tray, it must fit in the tray.

The intent of this rule is to prevent a competitor from replacing his OEM battery with something ludicrous, such as a locomotive battery. Nothing larger than a deep-cycle marine battery will be acceptable, even if some larger battery does fit in the OEM location.

The dBDRA has a policy which prevents a final determination from being made on any rules related issue which is discussed by telephone, email, fax, or the internet. We believe the rules for the 2001 season are very concise, and that any comments regarding areas specifically addressed in the rule book could lead to confusion or a miscommunication. While we may offer advice in this forum, a final determination as to the legitimacy of your installation will not be made until your vehicle is inspected in the judging lanes. If you are uncomfortable with how your installation may be interpreted by an official, you should correct the problem now.
