Hi guys, I did a search and wasn't able to find a real answer to this since most decide to use fibreglass to fit more woofers than normal.

My question is this...have any of you, built a pod, much like the factory subwoofers that are coming with newer cars these days...that will be housed in the spare tire.

I would like to retain the use of my spare tire, not really because I get flats often, but because I have waited over two hours for CAA before to pick me up when something went wrong, in about 15 minutes I can have my spare fitted and be on my way...also because I am not loking to compete or blow away people on the street with my system.

That being said I drive a 1992 GTI and have had my system stolen twice and now am using my factory deck and upgraded coaxials.

My plan is to lift the height of the rear floor under the carpet a bit in the hatch by using a few layers of carpet underpadding or thick foam. Keep the tire in the well, build a frame approximately 20 inches by 20 inches and about 2 to 2.5 inches high. Lay down FG matt into the spare tire and glass the frame. Attach a baffle and that way its all covered up the factory carpet...if I need the wheel, I lift up the woofer and have access...apart from the higher than normal floor, most passing theives would not know that it isn't stock height. And we are only talking a few inches...

I have estimated I can probably squeeze out about 0.6 cu ft. of displacement doing this. Has anyone done this? And any advice would be greatly appreciated...I am new to fibreglassing but the posts in here are fantastic for giving me the confidence to give it a go.

I will be running a single 10" or 8". Not sure what yet, but probably a Kicker Solobaric L5 series woofer...the amp is an older model Orion XTR250...

The woofer size will depend on how the frame looks...I am going to try it out, if it looks to high and abnormal I will make it smaller and use a smaller driver...I want to maintain a factory appearance as much as possible...even if it means having to sacrifice low bass extension...I figure the lowest my ****ty coaxs go now is like 200hz (haha) so what if I get 40Hz instead of 30Hz...it'll sound a million times better...

Thanks for your help guys...
