What other type of would would be suitable to use for box making? I wanted to go for a ride to a home depot in another town to get some MDF, but thats not looking very likely for this weekend. The lumber yards around here have everything but MDF.

Anything else worth using?
Gonna build a box around 4cuft for a 15" driver.

If MDF ceased to exist I would drench myself in gasoline and burn myself in protest like the old video of the monk.. [Smile]

Birch is supposed to be good, I havent ever really messed with many other woods for box building.

if i couldnt use mdf , i only use it cause its cheap and good for the price , i would use baltic birch or marine grade plywood . many people say its even better for building enlcosures than mdf , but it is kind of exspensive .

Particle board, especially the higher density stuff works very well.

Well, i went into my local menards today to look at there selection of plywood and low and behold, what do i see....MDF!!!! A friend said he called every lumberyard in town and nobody had it. That was sometime back, so maybe they just started carrying it.
And thank god! Birch plywood was $50 a sheet compared to $20 for MDF.

Birch is some good shiznit, wouldnt even need to carpet or vinyl, just put a little Polyurethane on it and your good to go. Maybe try a walnut stain? hehehe last time i bought some of this, it was $45 for a sheet of 3/4" 4'x8'

Or be like me and use your dad's supply of Walnut veneered particle board. [Big Grin]
He got A TON of it at an auction from Dunbar Furniture...I'm sure no one knows who they are but they used to build very high quality furniture for the rich and the famous.
$20K worth of veneer...he got it for a few 100. [Razz]

birch and other hard woods are good but particle board practicly desinigrates if u get it wet and it is realy soft so it'll flex too much, and ply wood can make funny sounds cuz its layers can rattle. go to http://www.lightningaudio.com/latech/ and click on the LAtech enclosure guide link, it tells u jus bout all u needa know for learnin how to build a box and bout materials

I'd go get some freakin thick plexi.... like 2" or something like that..... but then again it'd be so heavy....... it'd look tight, but to cut the stuff would take like........ a year... haha

Yup, I'd have to start giving Bobby Gately some business. Plus, with the demand, the price for plexi would drop. Hell I could probably learn how and do it myself if the price dropped enough [Big Grin]
